Ummm G96?
Am I missing something here?
I use G96 on my shotgun after it has been in the rain and same for the rifles.
Spray it on and it pushes the water away.

For many years I used 20 or 30 weight non detergent motor oil mixed with a little Varsol. Paint it on heavy with a brush when the metal has just dried and is still 200 degrees from the hot water tank... let it stand over night... then wash off with Varsol and dry it and assemble and oil...

I believe that water displacing oil is just an oil that is formulated to emulsify in water. Like any oil that when added to water turns into a white milky appearance. Most machining (coolants/lubricant.) oils that perform in this manner work well without the Bownells gunsmith mark up. The word "gunsmith" is like " tactical". It just inflates the price.

Right on ! Guntech KNOWs his stuff EH ! RJ

An emulsifying oil is NOT what you want to use. But just about any other oil will do the job nicely. Any regular oil will cut under the water and add protection to the metal. Add some solvent to it like Guntech does and it will more readily spread into nooks and crannies and lift out the water and replace it with itself.

I'm not sure I see the need to remove it though. At least not with solvent. Just a wipe to remove the excess should be fine even if adding some other oil provided the two oil types are compatible.
