I am getting ready to start with my first hunting dog. It will also be a family dog as there is already a cat and my 2.5 year old daughter. Labs and Goldens are an obvious choice but I am looking to see what breeds you would recommend and more importantly breeders worth working with. I am on the west coast and don’t want to travel too far so BC and Alberta will take preference, Vancouver Island would be ideal. Thank you for your input.

I cant help you with a breeder, but my cousin in PEI has 2 Portuguese water dogs. And 3 kids below the ages of 8. From what time I've spent around them, they are fantastic family dogs, and smart. They'd rather fight the waves of the Atlantic than get in the boat. No fear, and very smart

What are you going to be hunting with it? What percentage of "usage" is going towards hunting? Some breeds have more "hunt" and less "pet" in them; others, visas-versa.

This. Plus the same can happen within a breed. I know lab breeders that breed show and pet dogs and other breeders that breed hunting dogs. Do your research. My recommendation is always a versatile breed and I'm partial to the PP, as are a lot of members on this forum.

I have 2 Portuguese Water Dogs. Beautiful, smart and high energy dogs. Great with kids and family. Very barky but are loyal and loving too.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers!

One of the most overlooked breeds. Very good with family and they are hard to beat doing any kind of water work and retrieving.

Pound by pound the strongest water dogs out there!

mary howley from candelwood if you can get one ,labs are tuff to beat they have webbed feet for swiming double coat and oily skin for shedding water ,its what they do..my first choice would bea chessy but they can be not good with kids, not all of them but some of them hence i didnt take the chance and went with labs
