Waterfowl around North Bay

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone here hunts waterfowl around the North Bay area? I'm back in town this fall and done school, so I was looking to finally get out and try waterfowling with some friends from Nipissing U. I have a canoe, a couple shotguns and a friend can provide some duck decoys. Anyone know of any good spots to go set up to get a few ducks or geese?

Try the wild rice beds at Fish Bay on Lake Nipissing. Traditionally once the local birds were busted out migratory birds would start arriving there depending on weather around Thanksgiving weekend. I hunted there lots over the years and depending on weather and winds Oct 6-16 were the hot times. Pay close attention to the winds! 3 or 4 days of steady west winds usually meant good shooting when the weather broke. I am now out west and a lot of the sloughs have started emptying out of early migrant species this past week so You should see action there soon.

Nipising... the rice beds are stripped though... night hunts only, they aren't feeding there anymore, but some are resting for the night. With a canoe, you might be better to narrow down your hunting area... you will see fewer birds, but they will be closer, will probably work in to the dekes and you will get some shooting... it sure beats seeing hundreds of birds and never getting a shot... use google earth to follow navigable creeks that have easy road access and meander through crown land... look for enlargements or beaver ponds... set up on the fringe of the water, use available cover and don't move when the birds are working in, buy yourself some camo mesh gloves and camo facemasks because they will spot your hands and face pretty quick... if you are not a good caller, DON'T call... let the decoys do the work.

Hunted a couple spots a few years ago off the Sandam road. Also cache bay.
