Hey guys, this one is for the guys back home, i am retiring this year and relocating back to the St.Johns area, outside the city, im wondering what the duck situation is like, I never hunted duck growing up back home in the bay, just a few birds when we were out for partridge, come across the odd duck or two in the country, whats the hunting situation like for waterfowl, i know all about sea duck, but am really into marsh and water hunting for mallard and black and what not.

thanks in advance

Some areas are real good, others not so good, but you're gonna have to work for em. Outside Stjohn's I'd go around th Hawke Hills, I had many ducks down the witless bay line turn off. Up around Horsechops, Cape Broyle, St Shotts, all good areas but heavily hunted.

I see many pics the Newfoundland sportsman of Geese and ducks shot, but never have seen them in numbers like that.

Go get a 90 lb coyote instead !!!

Duck hunting on the Avalon Peninsula is nowhere near as good as it is in other parts of the island, especially the west coast. That's not to say there aren't sweet spots (some of them mentioned by sealhunter), but there are a lot of people chasing too few birds.

thanks for the replies fellows, I am now living down in Pouch Cove, just got posted to St.John's, ah... so nice to be back on the rock!!
from what a few older fellows here in town told me there is a sweet spot just a 1/2 hour from the house that no one hunts anymore, so i can see me building a few blinds around that marsh. Was out yesterday on the wheeler for the first ride and saw 3 moose, lots of rabbits, and two partridge, so yup im pretty excited now!
