I have Mod.98 with a brunette laminate stock. its an RC so Ivan applied some shellac at some point in history. When i first purchased the gun the shellac was flaking off. I would personally have kept it as is but "someone" went ahead and removed it without my permission. (don't get me started on that !!) Anyways. as much as I hate the fact it was modified. It looks a hell of a lot better!!! now the question is. I want to protect the wood and now restore to how it would have looked prior to Ivans work.

I have some birchwood casey gun stock wax. will this get an original look to it?

Boiled Linseed oil might work better if all the shellac is off the wood. Some guys soak the steel parts in white vinager to remove that blackish Russian blue as well. If I were doing it I might try an inconspicuous area below the stock line first for the blue removal.

which steel parts have the blackish russian blue? are we talking the barrel and receiver. i rather like how black those parts are. what colour should they be?

It's easy enough to re-shellac the stock. I used the amber flakes from Lee Valley on an East German M38 - Looks pretty much the same as it did when I first got it.... They usually ship next day.

Usually the Russians reblued each of the Mausers they captured along with force matching all the parts and electro pencilling them and red shellacing the stocks. A lot of guys hate the Russian treatment and try to bring the rifle back to the way it left the factory but if you like it the way it is, leave it that way. It's your rifle.
