Wax Slug laws

I spent an hour yesterday converting a box of target rounds to wax slugs, but that's only because at the public range I go to they only allow single projectiles so that you don't spatter other people's targets.

I think you will find the identification of the shell will be based on the manufactures marks on the shell. So if the wax slug you built was 7 1/2 bird shot (and probably marked such on the outer case) the LEO will treat it as a 7 1/2 shotgun shell not a slug, so if it is slug only hunting you may have some legal issues to deal with. You may win, but, what did you save? Turning a shotshell into a slug with wax(or any other material) should be left for SHTF senerios and playtime at the range only, not regulation hunting. My 2 cents.

my slugs say #9,#8,#7 1/2 on the side the hulls are factory AA that i reuse for slugs

Let me know when you find a rifle to shoot a 1oz piece of lead at $1/shot...
I have a mould for a 500gr (1.13oz) .459" bullets for my 45-70 and I have seen moulds for bullets up to 580gr (1.32oz). Factory ammo with 500gr bullets is very rare if not custom but my handloads are only about $0.35. My handload full power cast slugs are about $0.45 each. Factory 1oz rifled slugs can be had for as low as $0.85 each if you shop around.

I can fire a 500gr 45-70 cast bullet at 1400fps and it will pass through a 14" poplar tree. 12ga 1oz slugs at the same velocity wont even go half way due to the much larger frontal area and thus lower sectional density. I have managed to fire 1oz slugs at 1550fps before running into pressure problems (backed out primers, ripped crimps, hard extracts) out of an 18" barrel. Factory slugs sold as "1600fps" only chrony about 1450fps out of the same 18" barrel.

Ditto. I handload in AA hulls quite often and star crimp so you can't see the slug. If asked by an LEO when hunting I would offer to cut one open to prove it though.

my martini loads also cost under $1 with the bullet being bought at that

Those prices are actually based on lead costing $2/lbs. I have about 100lbs of free wheel weight ingots made up but my sources have slowed to a trickle. My one friend puts aside all the lead wheel weights for me and only finds about 10lbs/month (low volume shop). My other friend's shop switched to a "green" program where they actually pay the scrap dealers who are "green certified" to take the lead wheel weights away. I'm not "green certified" so I can't get any. Once my current stock is used up I may need to start buying lead at full retail cost :(
