Howdy tried doing a search on forum and google, but is there a list anywhere of what rimfire ammo is wax coated vs not ? I got a gsg 16 today and a drum mag , on the drum it specifically says do not use waxed ammo

Now I figured this is mostly bulk ammo but looking up some bulk are not very waxy and higher end stuff like cci mini mags are apparently wax coated even though they are highly reccomended by most as in terms of cycling the gun, I figure the wax could potentially build up in the drums as they are not suppose to be taken apart at all no way to clean , Just looking at keeping it running smoothly . Would be easyier if anyone had any lists of waxed or not waxed ammo to check out !

also what .22 ammo have you run specifically through the gsg 16 drum mag with good success or ones that had awful failures!

Cheers

Wax coating often refers to match ammos that use a mixture of waxes on the bullets. Other match ammos use greasy-feeling lubricant.

The majority of .22LR ammos that aren't match-type ammo will have a hard, dry-feeling lubricant. Bullets on such ammo will often be copper washed and high velocity, but some are lead. Use these rounds to avoid waxy or lubricious deposits in the action or chamber.

I honestly cant really tell is on any of the rounds, like there's a lubricant but it doesnt seem overly waxy on variety of ammo I have besides some really old stuff from the 70's that is cracked white all around which I'm assuming is the wax on it or lubricant they used , it seems the gun itself will run it , just not suppose to go in the drum mag

Mostly don't use LRN, 9/10 are waxed. That firearm likes HV ammo, I use copper plated in my GSG15.

I've got bulk rem golden bullet, Winchester m22 I have some of and same with federal champion stuff , I have a bit of cci mini mags which I heard it likes but wasnt sure how waxy they can all be even though they are plated / powder coated

Golden bullets feed well in my drum, as do m22 and minimags. Haven't tried fed champs. In all honesty, if you can disassemble the thing and clean it out after every charge, I'm sure you can get away with waxed. IANA drum engineer. The idea is to prevent excessive residue gunkin 'er up.

My GSG-16 mags were jamming up with CCI SV, in part at least due to the wax coating. Some batches have more than others - seems my latest purchase is at the very waxy end of the spectrum, with some bullet tips showing a small asymmetrical drip of wax. It would quickly build up on the feed lips and then cause a misfeed. I did a lot of file and sandpaper work on the various parts of the magazines after dismantling them, testing until they all worked very reliably. Part of that was smoothing the casting edges off the inside of the feed lips. Seemed to do the trick. But I wouldn't risk such waxy ammo in a drum. Things can pile up in there and you wouldn't know it until it just jammed.

I've not found CCI Quiet, either the old 710fps type or the newer Semi-Auto 835fps rated one, to be significantly waxy. But neither will cycle the GSG-16 either, so not relevant there.

Eley match is wax coated..
Not that I'd think you would giver a try in target ammo, but hey for the know..

good to know ! They say not to take it apart so maybe it needs some tricks to get back together but if it ends up breaking with no warranty wouldnt have anything to loose!

I've read high velocity is key for getting gsg16 to cycle reliably. I have some cci sub sonic but not SV I'll have to check them out a bit more ! wasn't planning on them to go in,
definitely trying to find non waxed or least waxiest for the drum since its recomended not to take it apart

yeah definitely want to run cheaper stuff it's for plinking lol with a 9 1/4" barrel dont expect super accuracy even with good stuff

Once you touch the “SK” series you will know what they mean
I watched a video last night I did find one with some examples and he mentioned them being pretty bad

A couple of reports in these forums of GSG-16 bolt carrier outside housings cracking, or of the bolt itself cracking, always with higher velocity ammunition. So when I picked one up I had already decided to go no hotter than CCI SV, and I installed a pair of slightly weaker recoil springs in aid of those slower rounds cycling the bolt fully. Took a bit of tweaking but the result is 100% reliability with my preferred ammunition. I use SV for .22lr shooting almost exclusively, going even slower for bolt actions, with Quiet or Semi-Auto Quiet. But SV works nicely in my 10/22 anyway, so seems a good fit for the GSG-16, to keep things simple.

Gotcha makes sense

I do have the new model thats been updated so maybe they addressed that problem , hopefully

Will definitely be upgrading parts too when I can, next goal is to get an optic
