When bedding a vanguard do you tape the bottom, sides and front of the recoil lug or just bed the lug tight with no tape on it? Older series 1 in to a McMillan sako hunter stock.

If possible I always tape the front, sides and bottom of a recoil lug... or at least make clearance after bedding. I don't believe there is any advantage to not create clearance in those areas... and some detriments to not making clearance.

Thanks. The lug is bottomed out right now and there is some extra clearance under the front of the action. The rifle shoots ok but I get some fliers from it.

I only taped the sides on my Howa 1500 recoil lug (same action as the Vanguard). Because the front action screw threads into the bottom of the recoil lug I looked at it as though I wanted to turn the bottom surface into one large pillar.

Due to the angled shape of the recoil lug I have never had issues removing the action from the stock - just have to pull it straight out.
