So my Vanguard S1 in 223rem is having trouble ejecting spent casings. It started when I was shooting Hornady Steel Match, I figured it was case of the steel cases. Today I shot 2 boxes of Zombie Max and only ever 2nd or 3rd case would eject properly. If I pulled the bolt slow or fast it wouldn't matter. I even tried rechambering the spent casings but that wouldn't work either. Has anyone come across this? Any help would be great!

Thanks, Ian

What's the problem exactly? It's not extracting the cartridge from the chamber or the cartridges won't eject they just fall into the action as you pull the bolt back? If it's not extracting then check that your extractor moves back and forth without binding and the spring returns it to it's resting position. If they just fall into the action check your ejector, push it in to see if it's binding or has a weak spring ( should be quite hard to push in, the extractor spring doesn't have as much tension). If the extractor spring is weak or binding it can cause the same problem also.

Ya the casing is falling into the action. I'm going to pull the bolt and take a good look at it. I pulled the bolt and put a casing in it and the ejector has lots of pressure! The extractor seems to move freely but I'm thinking of stretching the spring a tad to see if that helps too.

I had one do this when it was new. I'd pull the bolt back and the empty case would drop out of the bolt before it even had time to try to eject. It was a Varmint model and that actually would have been great to use it as a single-shot. I took the extractor out and cleaned it and it worked perfectly after that. I never found anything I could blame it on either, but it might have been a chip of metal or even binding on the pin itself. External cleaning with brake-cleaner and compressed air didn't help me but might solve your problem.

The ejector probably has oil or grease holding it back in the cold. Its sluggish. Spray your bolt with brake clean to wash it and try again.

This. My bolt was full of a fairly heavy grease. Nearly cost me a 5x5 buck when it went click in -20 weather. Loudest click in history. Use an action cleaner or something similar to break that #### up and flush it out. Then a few drops of G96 in it's place.

The vanguard's bolt has to be the fastest to field strip that I've seen. Twist the end a quarter turn and it will pop apart in your hand.

I take it the gun went bang on the second try.

Ok I finally got the extractor off my bolt. Bent threw 3, 1/16" punches to get the pin out. There wasn't much for debris in between the bolt and the extractor. So I cleaned it up and tried to stretch the little spring as a little bit. Put it back together and extractor pressure is better. Put a couple empty casing in the chamber. Ran the bolt and it's extracting like it did with the first box! Thanks for the advice fellas!
