Gentlemen:
I am looking for a starting load for a 180 gr bullet in 30-06. This is the Higgenson powder. A pet load for your rifle would also be appreciated.
Thanks, Al

I Use H450 Data, start low and work up, I don't use it for 30-06 but I'm sure it will work fine.
I find it works well for my .270 win.

4350, either brand, is hard to beat in a 30-06, with 180 grain bullets. There are wide variations of it shown from various sources. If I gave you a starting load you would look it up in a book anyway, so you might as well go to the Hodgdon site on the web and get a starting load to go by.
you will likely get suggestions for numerous other powders. Most handloaders who have tried everything, end up with 4350 (30-06, 180 grain.) This was not always so. Norma 204 was better, but not available now.

I know that there are lots of fine powders, and this may not be everyones first choice for the 180 grain in the '06, however, I have 7 lbs of WC 852, and I might as well burn it there.

I am completely unfamiliar with WC852. To work well for your purpose it should be in the general burning rate as 4350.
You will have to find out its burning rate.

the burn rate chart I was looking at said it was in between IMR-4831 and H-4831, seems to be some difference on opinion out the on the internet.

I would contact Higginsons and they would tell what the closest data that could be used.

I have been burning my way through 14# of this powder from Higginson's over the past couple of years. For all practical purposes, it is identical in burning rate to old H450, which puts it in the H4831 area, possibly just a tad quicker. It works very well in a couple of my 30-06's with the 180 grain bullet at right around 60 grains. [please start at 57 and work up carefully] My Chrony says 2680 in a 24" barrel at 60 grains. No pressure signs, easy extraction, quite accurate. One caution: There was another lot number of WC852, not from Higginson's, that was considerably faster burning [more like 4320] That would present an issue if you had some from a different source. Regards, Eagleye.

Gentlemen:
Thanks for the input. I tried 57 grains with 180 gr RN KKSP Imperial bullets, and my chrony says 2714 fps, and the best group was under 3/4", the primers were not flattened and there were no extraction issues. When I consider all the moose I shot with a 7x57 with a 175 gr bullet at under 2400 fps, I am sure this will work just fine for me. I have 800 of these bullets, and with 7 lbs of powder I will be able to hunt for a while.
