Howdy,

I am brand new to reloading and have a manual on its way in the mail. Before it gets here I wanted to get a head start on sizing my brass.

I will be loading a 55g FMJ .224 projectile with 24g of WC735 with CCI small rifle primers.

My issue is case length, I can't find on the interwebs what they should be at?

Right now most of my once fired brass is at 1.730 give or take .001

Obviously this is a very minute difference but will this be an issue when I begin reloading?

Do I just keep it the same but maintain the same OAL?

SAAMI Spec states 1.760 - .020 (which means 1.740 - 1.760) just maintain this. But if you want to get anal about it check it in your chamber if it's over sized then just size it down until the brass will chamber easily. I'm assuming your shooting an AR which likes brass in the saami spec.

Your brass seems a few thou short which is OK just ensure the headspace is good then reload it. As you shoot it and reload it it'll lengthen a bit more and more and more, then trimming is more necessary. I've read here quite a few times where guys have to shoot their brass twice before it's too long to chamber and needs a trim. So in short if it's short just leave it and reload it, it'll sort itself out in this instance.

Are they resized? If not, they'll get longer after you run them thru your FL resizer die.
If they are resized, you're ok, no need to trim them, which is the most time consuming task in reloading IMHO.

Your load is almost exactly what I used when I had my M4. 25.0gn worked well for me!

55gn Lake City
25.0gn WC735 (such a nice metering powder)
Winchester WSR Primers
Winchester brass trimmed to 1.750"

...And yeah that's a Norc!

Brass usually shrinks after firing, then lengthens again when resized, I'm sure they'll be close to 1.75 after that.

Mind you some of my 2x fired Federal brass still hasn't hit 1.75 yet. Probably about half of it is still around 1.735.
