What is best to lightly spray my 1957 Wingmaster shotgun with before going out in the rain to the salt marshes and to re-oil with when I strip it, clean it and dry it off after?

WD or Fluid Film?

I have numerous sample spray cans of FF I picked up at a trade show.

Ahh I'd use a good quality gun oil. WD-40 is a penetrating fluid that will wash any oil on your shotgun off.
Fluid Film is a great product. The NS Dept of Transportation uses it almost exclusively as a penetrating fluid and as undercoating.
However..it ain't gun oil either.

so i guess an aerosol can of your fav gun oil is the best bet? cuz i was thinking about the same thing to spray on my shotgun before trap incase it rains...

I would recommend an oldie - G-96 Gun Treament. It is silicon based and has been excellent for over 35 years for me.

my gunsmith buddy swears by G96 Gun Treatment. Cleans lubricates protects.
Spray it all over your gun before and after. I use it and it is good.

Oil

Another good one if you can locate any is Young's 303 oil. It forms an emulsion with any water (to a point) that gets on the gun. A lot of expensive English shotguns have lasted well using this oil. At one time Reliable Gun carried it. Maybe they still do.

WD-40 also breaks done rust, and since most guns are coated in a rust blueing it is not exactly the best trhing for a gun. I have seen a shotgun that was sprayed with WD-40 and then left until next season have sections of the blueing wipe off when it was cleaned. I personally recommend just getting a can of aerosol gun oil and use that, that is what I have been using.

WD-40 is a horrible rust proffer, and not very good for lubricating. It is good for drying out and driving out water, it is a Water Displacing oil. I t penetrates very well but doesn't have a good lubricant in it.

For a good firearms lubricant, buy a litre of pure synthetic motor oil, it lubricates well and works at -40 and is cheap compared to buying gun lubricants in the little bottles.

I figured I would sound off on this one as I have used all three on guns. WD40 makes a great cleaner & pentrator but lubes like crap & offers no rain protection. Fluid film make a great preservative & ok lube but melts easily with any kind of heat & gets everywhere when the gun gets hot( down the gun, on the scope, in your pants, etc). My smle took 3hrs to clean out. Synthetic 5w30 works great on all my milsurps on the bolt(thin film here) , but is too thick to get in the nooks & cranies. G96 or clp & rem oil work great on the metal but doesnt lube as well as the 5w30 on misurps.
