Just finished, target is the white dot at the end on the right hand side, it's actually a 6 foot x 6 foot square. Goal is to hit a standard piece of 8.5"x11" printer paper with iron sights within 10 rounds. We have a match in the Milsurp forum for full power battle rifles and so far we've shot to 500 yards getting 6 out of 10 on paper with irons and the Garand. Looking forward to that first iron sights 1,000 yard hit, might have to dig into my M118 stash.

Here's our match and rules, we even had a belt fed compete. :)

500 yard target so far, Garand / irons:

Think it was 23 MOA / clicks up past my 500 yard zero when I settled, tough to say exactly as I tweaked back and forth. Making it about 35 clicks total with the M118. I was high using my initial ballistic calculator solution, as this stuff runs just about 100fps faster than I thought.

pope_face shooting far with irons is my favourite type of shooting outside of bird hunting. The precision you can achieve with iron sights amazes me.

This is pretty cool all around Angus.
Gives me some ideas for the ranchland up behind my place. We've got a 600 yard "range' me and my neighbor measured out and cleared. I need a new optic for my DMR rig for 1000 though :D
Let's see more pics

Makes me remember my militia days as a sixteen year old with the FN with Iron sights. Six hundred and five inch groups with ten rounds.
A. your photographs take me back in time. The only thing missing is the 25 set and the FN. Thanks for that.
Anytime you want to help me make a 1000 yard range on my land just say the word and bring a chain saw, brother!!

What I didn't show is we had to build a 12' target stand due to a crown in the land, and then the shooting platform. Shot off it today, and fired 80 rounds. Got a 6" 3 shot group at one point, my best group of all time for irons at long range / 1,000. My rifle loves the M118 Special Ball, a shame it's long out of production, I feel bad shooting it but hey, it was meant to be shot.

As a side note getting used to the Garand's Krieger, it doesn't like to run dirty. Amazingly accurate clean, and opens up a lot after 30 rounds, first one I've had act like that. Three patches and it's back.

How does the 308 Garand compare to the 30-06 Garand? is there much difference in recoil? I would definitely like to try and hit anything at 1000 yards, my range only goes to 300, I haven't tried to shoot at that distance yet with my Garand maybe I'll give that a shot first before thinking of 1000 yard shooting.

It's definitely a challenge, my issue wasn't getting groups last night, most were about 1.5-2 MOA with a couple stunners like the 6", but getting the groups to go where you want them to. I played a hunch and got on the board quickly when the first ten missed it completely. However wind was gusting 5-10 knots, and was drifting my groups back and forth like mad, a lot can change in the 2km round trip drive to check the target.

Recoil not sure how to answer, as both have negligable recoil. The rifle I've fired the most the last few years is my .375 H&H for hunting / culling overseas, and it makes everything smaller than it feel like .223 so I'm likely the wrong fellow to ask. Equal I suppose is the only answer I can provide,

Angus

I agree, I think that really is a test of skill... Like you mentioned with the gusts, you have to be so much more involved than just lining up the crosshairs and pulling the trigger.

I'd love to try my hand at something like this one day... I need to find a 1000 yard range somewhere local to me. :D

Same difference at 1,000 yards with the wind scoped, as in a 10mph wind / breeze, you have about 9 feet of lateral / windage drift. The skill comes in with guys who excel at reading wind differences between shots, by 1,000 yards it's all about compensation to make groups not just holding in one place. It's a completely different kind of shooting and I really enjoy that, nice change from as you mention just repetitive holds as in 500 yards and under.

Direct as ever I see. :D

It's a long time ago in fairness to him and memory is fallible, but that would be above the capabilities of the equipment and issue ball by good measure in my opinion.

Hey, we're slaves to the same master again. I'm sure you recognize where our range is... :)
