We missed a big birthday.

The 8x57 turned 120 years old this year. This old cartridge is one of the best hunting rounds, yet it has not gained much fame in North America.

The 8x57 spawned numerous fine sporting cartridges. Here is a list:

The 5.6x57 was designed by RWS with an eye towards hunting Roe deer and Chamois. The factory load from RWS is a 74gr bullet at 3380fps. Reloaders can get 3700fps with 60gr projectiles.

The 6mm Remington is basically an 8x57 necked down to 6mm.

The .257 Roberts is the case necked down to .257"; this is a great deer round and will do well on larger game with the proper bullets. It has very mild recoil and is efficient. You can use as little as 35 - 37grs of powder with a 100gr Partition or TSX and get very good results.

The 6.5x57 is not very well known here. You can get +2600fps with a 130gr bullet.

The 7x57 - need I say more? One of the best hunting cartridges ever.

The 9x57 - again, not well known here. COTW puts a 250gr slug at 2260fps. This would make it a great short range number on just about any North American game.

9.3x57 is another great number. Perhaps some folks (Noel) will chime in with respect to the effectiveness of this wonderful cartridge.


The .30-06 is basically a scaled up 8x57.

True. But the 7x57 is a necked down 8x57.

Wasn't there some lawsuit by Mauser against Springfield because the latter was basically a copy?

Yeah, there was a lawsuit requiring Springfield to pay royalties, due to the use of the Mauser action.

I bought my Remington 700 classic in 8x57 simply because it is the only time it has been chambered in a factory North American rifle. Unless someone knows of another time???

I think you are right ROA. Oddly enough Winchester and Remington chambered a few rifles in 9x57 in the 1930's, but no American manufacturer chamber the 8x57 until the Remington Classic.
