Hi.

So far, most of my stuff has only been between the range and back.

Now that I am a hunter, I am concerned about weather protection.

I spent last night with the 0000 steelwool & gunoil to work as much rust from a recent acquisition as possible..

but going forward I wonder if I can do better?

Paint/Duracoat/ceracoat..etc... if it's worth it or not. ( beyond the periodic oiling)

I am hoping the hardcore hunters who travel through the mud, rain and snow have any suggestions to protect the longetivity/durability of their

arms?

Thanks.

If you wipe it down with an oily rag at the end of a day of hunting, rust wont be a problem. a couple oils that work good are REM oil and birchwood caseys baracade. Your rifle will look good for a lifetime if you take care of it. If you really want to spend some money and want to put a coating on it, ceracoat is a good coating, but it still dosent get rid of the need to wipe down the the inside of the action and your bolt. Personally I prefer the oily rag method of keeping rust away.

It doesn't really matter if it is blued steel and wood, or synthetic and ceracote, you still need to give it a cleaning/wipedown when it has been exposed to bad weather.

"...work as much rust from a..." Check the innards too. Trigger group etc. 'Gun oil' isn't required. Any oil will suffice. Much quicker to use a light touch with a fine, brass, wire wheel in a bench grinder. Eye protection and having a bench grinder is mandatory.
You'll want to seal the inside of the stock(assuming it's wood), as well. Any wood sealer from Crappy Tire will do nicely.
A can of WD 40 (squirt the innards) and drying the outside is enough when on a hunt. Then a good cleaning and lightly oiling at home.
