Would you spend your own money to own a Japanese made Weatherby (Vanguard - or a Howa)?

All current Mark Vs are made in Saco Maine. The previous generation were made in Japan, and before that, by Sauer in Germany.

My next hunting rifle probably will be a Vanguard.

I looked at one 2 weeks ago. for $500 at wholesale they seem pretty good. felt better in my hands then the 700sps did. the floor plate seemed kinda cheep though. took me about 30 secs to get it back closed. cause the mag spring just kinda hangs out

they also come with a factory shot target and they gurentee 1.5 moa

My only beef with them is the Butler Creek synthetic stock, I'm gonna go for the Sporter at $620...probably be a couple years though.

The vanguards were a good deal when you had a chance to get an accurate one.
Now that they pull all the Sub MOA rifles off the end of the line and sell them for too much money they are not a real bargain at all

They are a good deal & shoot very well. They just don't interest me. Besides all my 'Japanese' rifles are Brownings.

I don't want one, but it is nothing to do with it being made in Japan, or being a Weatherby. If I did want a modern sporting bolt action with a fixed internal magazine, in a caliber they make, I would certainly consider a Weatherby Vanguard.

Actually, this is quite annoying. But is it possible that a sub-MOA rifle will be outshot by a regular one with a change of ammo? I mean, maybe the sub-MOA is that accurate because it happens to really like the test ammo.

Well if they guarantee 1.5" and have a test target to prove it I'd still consider that an accurate rifle. I am sure that with some experimenting/handloading it would be a sub MOA rifle  Not bad for 5 bills I'd say.

Looks like you need to pay another 3 hundred to get one with a sub MOA test target  I think I'd be buying a Vanguard and look forward to a pretty easy challange to break the almighty MOA.

The MOA model also has a fibreglass Bell & Carlson stock, not the injection molded one. It's not worth an extra $300 mind you but it's there. ANY Vanguard can be an MOA rifle IMHO.... :D

Vangaurds are a good deal,I just bought my third vangaurd about a month ago.223 Stainless(not MOA)it will shoot handloads under 1/2''.All the vangards that I have owned would shoot well under a inch.

I have owned at least five Howas of different persuasion over the years, Vanguard, Smith & Wesson, Mossberg, and every one shot under an inch, so I'm not too worried.

Currently looking for one in 300 Win Mag, if anyone knows where there is one.

When Wby started manufacturing again in the USA both Saco Maine and Acrometal ( ATEK ) were making the Mark Vs . One did the Long action ( Saco I think ) , the other did the MkV standard and other did the MarkV Magnum.

Problem was Saco was too busy making M60 machine guns so all production was switched to Acrometal that year

See link ( even though it doesn't say in the picture caption its a Wby MkV

http://www.atekmanufacturing.com/s/content/s/industries/firearms

I was told this by Wby because I was talking to them weekly at one point about my Accumark . I made the mistake of trying to be first on the block . They had no brass / ammo ( 30-378 ) for over 6 months after I recieved my rifle , but thats another story

BTW , I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Non USA Wby . My last two USA made weatherbys are no better made than my Howa / Sauer . If anything, both myself and my buddy have had problems with our extractors

Most of you won't believe this , but the Accubrake ( all brakes Wby are serialized to the rifle ) on my 30-378 had the serial number engraved with a vibrating engraver . A kid with a file could have done a better job

That's just funny!

I would most definately buy a Vanguard! I think they're an excellent value. My concern is that the places I called all carry last years model, with the straight comb stock. I want the Monte Carlo stock! I'd love one in 7mm RM, I own a Howa 1500 in .308 and after a little work, sub-MOA is easily achieved.

The accuracy guarantee throws a lot of people for a loop. It's supposed to shoot 3 shots into 1.5"@100 yards, and anything shooting better than 1 inch becomes a sub-MOA model. Bear in mind, Weatherby test fires them and as soon as they can shoot a group under 1.5" they're ready to go. People don't realise that they do it with whatever ammo is on hand. It could have been the first 3 shots they tried. I think that experimentation will reveal that precision handloads will make damn near any Vanguard shoot into an inch. If that fails, do as I always say, trigger job + glass bed.

Needless, I'm waiting for some Canadian shops to start carrying the new model, even a package gun with the cheap Banner 3-9x would be fine, I just wanna 7 Mag!
