Weatherby TRR 338-378

I have never been a fan of Weatherby rifles. They are expensive pretty looking guns that are sufficient for hunting but by no means would I consider them a precision rifle. Just my opinion.

You don't hear about 338s being loaded with lighter slugs.

Why is this?

Guy at the range has a 338 Lapua and he's talking about using 180gr and 200gr for hunting purposes. His velocites were in the 3400 feet per second range.

Why is that? Because, for lack of a kinder-gentler term, they suck. Their BC is crap and most guys that use them (in a heavy lime the RUM/Edge/SDM/Lapua/L.Imp) are trying to get an impressive muzzle velocity number to swell their ego. Certainly dude at the range is. In reality, once you get out to where the über-338s play, the 180s and 200's (and even the 250s) are starting to suck serious wind. The only use for 180s, as far as I can see, is in the 338 Federal, which is an albatross of a cartridge that can't push a decent weight-for-caliber bullet fast enough to do any good.

Performance at 15 feet from the muzzle is nice, but in a RUM/Edge/SDM/Lapua/L.Imp, 1500 yards from the muzzle is where it matters.
