I bought one of these beauties last month and am just waiting for 8 feet of snow to melt so I can get to my hunting land to try it out. Throw me a bone and give me your thoughts on this rifle, good, bad, ugly, what I should know about it, quirks etc. Thanks.

It's a Howa, what can one say?
Excellent rifle, usually very accurate.
The Synthetic stock is not the very best, but is quite serviceable.
Trigger may need a bit of work.
Overall, a very good choice!

I bought a vanguard sporter (wood stock) in 308 last month. Barrel is broken in. Love it. Just over an inch with factory ammo. Pretty sure it'll come under with handloads.

The wood stock makes it a bit on the heavy side IMO. But I liked the wood better then the series one sythetic. the series two synthetic is pretty nice though.

did you get the series 1 or series 2? I was in the market for a new hunting rifle and never really considered the Vanguard as I wasn't wanting an entry level rifle. Then I found out about the new S2 in stainless, grabbed one in 257wby and couldn't be happier. Since then I have realized that I was giving the old S1 a bit of a short leash, a new trigger and an aftermarket stock and you have a very nice rifle. My only complaint of the S2 is that I actually like the new synthetic stock enough I'm not sure I still want to change it out for wood.

Just bought a new Vanguard in .243 as a beater coyote gun. I paid $349 BNIB!
I went to the range with 5 loads to try (55-75gr bullets) and every one shot less than an inch, the best being 55gr Ballistic Tips at 3980fps avg. This load went 5shots into less than .5"
This gun out shoots others I own that cost 5 times as much.

I have a Howa 1500 in 308 win and it shoots well and functions good.

The only problem I have had so far is not firing in extreme cold. (-50 to -70 with windchill on Baffin) But a bit of gas line anti freeze in the action usually does the trick.:D

I have shots seals at distances up to 300 meters on the ice with it with great success.

Edit: I have the Houge stock in green, like the looks of it, but it still a little flimsy.

OH..I hope none of my rifles are in my hands,if its that cold outside.I will never find out if they function at that temp,or not!

If I needed one, or I had the space and money for more guns I don't need, I'd get one. I couldn't wait for spring to try it out.
