Ok, so I am all set to bed my vanguard in its new fancy wood stock. I've decided against pillar bedding after looking in to it a bit more and will just bed the recoil lug and tang. I've done the inletting on the recoil lug, that went pretty well. My plan is to bed the lug and use the unbedded tang as support, with the action screw holding it all in place from there and some electrical tape around the back of the action to give a little clearance. Then, remove the action and do the tang after the lug cures.

Does this make sense to folks? It's my first time bedding a rifle.

Also, when I go to inlet the tang does anyone have any tricks or suggestions? I know nothing should be removed from the area surrounding the tang (the vertical area going up around the tang which surrounds the action), but whats the best way to remove the base part in that rounded recessed area? A chisel won't cut it and I'm thinking a dremel won't leave to flat of a surface back there...

Thanks!

I bedded the whole action when I did mine in a Bell & Carson. I wrapped some tape around the barrel at the front of the stock till I had the barrel clearance I wanted. Then I used a dremel to take some material away, but I left the tang area alone around the screw hole to keep everything lined up good. I put lots of bedding compound around the vertical part of the tang so now it has a nice tight fit. I'm not sure if it's the right way, but it worked for me!

With the angled front to the recoil lug the Vanguards are easy to take out of the bedding. One thing to check when you take it apart is whether you have bedding compound in the front hole. Get that out so the screw doesn't bottom out before the action is drawn down into the bedding.

Yup, it separated quite easily! Left a few air bubbles in important places so I did it all over again and now its all pretty.

*pretty enough for me, it doesnt look the best but it serves the purpose.
