I've been keeping an eye out for a used 223 to play with these days and I see a new Weatherby Varmint Vangaurd .223 for less than I was thinking I'd cough up for a used one beit a Remington, Tikka, whatever. Plus the vendor's site has regular price for about 2 bills more. Check it here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=373441
Anyone out there have one of these? Any opinions? Should I?

Many thanks in advance...

I have a Howa 1500, stainless, heavy barrel in .204 Ruger. Trigger was really crappy but I got that sorted out. With factory ammo it does under 1/2" easy.

**EDIT** When I said I got the trigger sorted out I meant trigger job, not replacement. Now the factory trigger is real good, no need to replace it.

The Vanguard has a good reputation. That seems like as good a price as I ever see for a new one. With shipping included, I think I would go for that if I was in the market for a bolt action .223. If you like a detachable mag though, you might care to wait a bit. Weatheryby is introducing that option to the Vanguard line.

I'm not sure which rifle is in the ad. The regular black synthetics can usually be picked up for $500-530. If this is the same thing with a tan stock, then it's whatever the colour change is worth to you. If it's a heavy barrel it's a pretty good deal, but it doesn't look like it in the picture.
The triggers are crap, and may need changing. A trained ape could change the one in a Vanguard.

Are you buying new or used?
New you can sort through a few guns and see which has the better factory target,
used you might wanna see what the factory target looks like.
It all depends on what your looking for, inexpensive and a poor target or inexpensive a good target.
It really gives you a good starting point if you need to spend more money on triggers other tricks to get it shooting bette.
I have had three and now I have kept the Wby Vanuard in .257Wby.
The 30-06 all three where touching ( factory target ) and when I took it to the gravel pit, I was within the 1-1/2 using 165 grn. bullets.
Spend your money wisely is my opinion.
Tight Groups,
Rob
