Weaver Grand Slam Ring problem

I picked up a set for a friend, and we couldn't get his rifle sighted in... we found out that the rings weren't even engaging the cross slots in his rail. Anyone else come across any issue like this? I already emailed Weaver about it, so we'll see what they have to say...
