I am trying to date a Webely MKI Revolver serial#36984

They were produced from 1887-1894 so depending on the date of manufacture and barrel length this is either a proscribed antique or prohibited revolver.

I tried phoning the RCMP Firearms office and they said if it doesn't have a letter - it isn't an antique. Sadly I don't think that all pre-1889 pistols were issued with RCMP letters upon manufacture - but I know that once identified as an antique it is always wise to obtain a letter.

All Mk.1 .445 Webley's are antique status, and by law you do not need a letter from the RCMP.

It is really sad that we are paying these high paid RCMP firearms section staff who seem to not only not know the details of their job and the laws and regulations of Canada but also mislead those who ask them for assistance.

The reason they like you to have a letter is because they now know of that revolver's existence and now have a name to put that gun and serial number to in their database. You do not need a letter for a pre-1898 antique firearm that meets the requirements as set down by parliament.

Note no mention of a RCMP letter required under the firearms act.
 
Ahhh! Antique Registry!

I'd carry the section above that prescribed all Mk1s are antique, and nevermind the letter.
 
IIRC
I believe all MkI's and MkII's are antique. MkIII's might or might not be antique, and I don't believe it is easy (if even possible?) to tell exact date of manufacture.
