Does anyone have any idea of the thread size for the cylinder retaining screw on a Webley Mark 1 revolver?
The thread on mine is partially damaged and I’d like to repair it.
By the look of it the screw used to bottom out on the barrel but I’m getting about one turn before the threads in the barrel stop it going further (looks cross threaded in one spot).
The screw seems to be 28tpi but I don’t have many threads to count...
Definitely smaller than 1/4”.
The screw threads are .208” diameter (+/-).
The hole is .185” - .190” depending how deep I measure (they are damaged..).
So what thread is it?
And can I even get a tap for it? (It just needs a clean up)
Or, do I have to re tap it to a modern thread and make a new screw?
Any input is appreciated,
Thanks.

It sounds like it could be 1 BA Thread, which is .209 and 28.2 TPI, according to British Tools & Fasteners website. (They're actually in New York.) They have both taps and dies in 1 BA.

Aha... In Canada you could try Taylor Tool in Cambridge ON. I see from their webisite that they also have offices in Alberta and BC.... AND... on page 105 of their catalogue, yes, they have BA taps and dies :) They've been around almost since God was in short pants. I'm pretty sure my set of taps and dies for microphone stand thread (5/8-27) came from the, back in the 80's.

Put some grease or paint or whatever in the screw hole and then thread in a chopstick and measure off that...it'll give a close approx.

That's a very nice, clean Webley, BTW. I have a Mk.VI; mechanically perfect but little finish, possibly due to having been used in the Great War.

Thanks, it’s my first antique and other than this thread appears in excellent shape.
I just got the components to start loading for it.
If all goes well I hope to shoot an IPSC match with it, lol...

Cool! As regards components, "jethunter" here on CGN (jetbullets.com) has a couple of bullet styles for the Webley.
Please post a report when you get it out to the range.

I picked up two styles he recommended, I think the 265 grains will be the one due to the shape.
Just waiting on the taps to show up (2-3 weeks delivery).
I’m definitely going to document this experiment as it progresses.
Cheers,

An update:
I got the tap today and it’s definitely 1BA, it just took a second to clean it up. Fixed.
Thanks Joaquin, I probably would have screwed it up without your input.
Thanks!

Excellent! Glad I could help. I presume you got it from Tayor Tool as I think they make them to order, hence the delay.
