Hi Guys,

I'm looking at getting an antique webley revolver. I've found one in the states thats an WG Army SN# 15983. The dealer lists it as being manufactured around 1897 or 1898. Can anybody help me determine a more accurate manufacture date for this revolver?

I've been through this myself.

First don't take the word of someone on the internet as gospel, although lots of people on here make great starting points and some you can take to the bank. You'll have to call the CFC and ask to speak to a firearms technician, they'll tell you what they consider an antique in Canada and it's their opinion that you have to worry about.

For what it's worth when I did the exact same thing I was told 14000 is their considered cutoff. Again call and find out, I'd love to find out they expanded the range.

Hope that helps.

Yes they have expanded the cut-off....:).....I just forget the particulars...

Sorry dude the the antique cut-off for the WG is 14000 when I imported two just a few months ago.

Gary, when it comes to Webleys, there are some exceptions.

The OP needs to go on the net and search for sites that can give him definite information.

I had one done about a year ago and the CFC gave me the same story.

After contacting a fellow with some CSSR documents and ledgers and some intervention from John at Wolverine Supplies, who has a passion for Weblys the firearm was declared an antique, deregistered and a letter was issued by the CFC.

Good advice, I do it before bidding on every gun. They are great to deal with and never refused assistance, they will actually go to the site you are looking at and help identify it with you!

Finally got a reply back from the RCMP. turns out most of the webley WG's I was looking at are considered antiques. It seems as Loke_81 suggested, there is some cut off point in the serial numbers where antiques end and restricted status starts. The highest serial number they considered an antique status was in the 11000s.

They told me in the 113,000's.....

Sometimes the CFC seems to make it up as they go.

I made enquiries with them on two different WGs about a year and a half ago.
s/n 146xx was Ok and they gave me a letter for it.
s/n 164xx was not OK, manufactured in 1898 according to their references. They would not give me a letter.

The tech told me verbally that the cutoff was "about s/n 15,000" but didn't say exactly what the number was. It's a secret, I guess. ;)

Does anyone have the FRT? That should define what the s/n cutoff is for antique status.

Were you talking to the tech department? They are usually pretty good at giving you good info. 1-800-731-4000 ext.1090 cfc techs.call them with the model / serial # and caliber and you should get a yes or no answer!

I did originally talk to a tech, but I guess some of the these revolvers are on the boarder between antique and restricted. I also had several makes to go through so he requested I send him an email.
