Hey guys,

Soooo I'm getting married

My soon to be wife suggested she might like to get me a firearm as my wedding present.

I was thinking something gorgeous and timeless, so I figured an over/under shotgun would be best.

I have only shot skeet a few times but it's something I want to get into down the road.

So a few Q's:

What's the standard gauge length? I was thinking 12 gauge and 26"

Any suggestions for a model from 1-2K?

I LOVE the FN SC1 but I don't think we get them in canada:

I do like this style:

The most common gauge is 12, with 28" likely being the most common barrel length for skeet.Whatever you decide on, make sure it fits you. I would start by looking at Browning and Beretta.

As above, a Browning or Beretta. The 1-2k range likely means looking used, but the advantage of those makes is that a used one will still last you thousands of rounds. 12ga is most common, I prefer 32" barrels, but 28 and 30 are certainly more common.

The less expensive brands out there make an alright product, but it depend on what you want to do. If you will only be putting 1000 rounds a year though, a Bakail or Yildz would be great. If you are planning on shooting 1000 rounds a month (out a week as lots of trap shooters will), spend a few more bucks on a higher quality gun.

Don't get a gun with 26" barrels - those are for thick cover and not for clays. The longer the barrels; the better in my opinion and you will find most sporting guns will be 28 - 30" with the expensive ones have 32" barrels. Shotguns are 100% about fit, you can have a 30k Kolar and shoot poorly if it doesn't fit you. If you belong to a club, ask around and see if you can shoot a few different guns. Buy the gun that fits you best in the highest quality you can afford, this will be a lifetime gun if you get a quality firearm.

Thanks for the advice! I moved out to Durham a couple years ago and have yet to find a club. I'll be looking for a 30" then.

Buy a Beretta or Browning Or a K gun. Whatever you choose, do it based on fit and feel to you, not on looks.
I've shot 28 inch and 30 inch O/U for skeet and prefer 30. I've also shot 32inch semis which are more like 36inch O/U without issue. Barrel length isn't normally an issue, it's what you get use to. You will probably develop a personal preference.

I would suggest working on stretching the 2K limit juuuuust a little - maybe to 2500 after tax. That opens up more Berettas and Brownings that look like your second choice in your original post. If not, you can definitely manage to find something under 2K, at least in Browning, or a used Beretta. I'm more of a hunter than a clay shooter, so I leave comments on barrel length/gauge to others. Enjoy! Mine bought me an OU for a special occasion too - it certainly makes a memorable gift (ended up being a Beretta 686 ultralight 12 gauge, 28" barrel. Fantastic grouse gun!).

Yep, get the gun, whatever you do don't let her talk you into getting a watch instead.

One day you'll come home and some other guy will be in bed, what are you gonna do, wake him up and tell him what time it is!

Gotcha!;)

count how many times you shot/fished/skied/golfed/whatever the past year and ask for the "present" of being able to do half of that the year after your marriage...
