Talked with one of the farmers I know last week and he told me that he was going to put out a couple of dead calves, so I planned for a saturday morning walk.
Every morning before leaving town I go to Tims for a coffee, muffin and some timbits and it has to be 10 timbits because IM not superstitious or anything like that but every time I get anything BUT 10 I dont get fur that day. I dont know what the deal is about that. lol Happened twice this year already with two different hunting partners and once last year. So.... I got to stick with what works right?
We get out before sun up. The bait pile is only about 700yds from the farm yard, but I decide I want to take the hard way this time so that they cant see me coming in as the bait pile in on to of a ridge. My partner stays on top of the ridge while I walk down and along the side of the little valley. A week ago we had a nice little storm and now in the low ground the snow is sometimes up to my hips. fun fun
Heres a pic looking back to my shooting position. I was on the second ridge on the right side approx 200yds and the bait pile is not in the pic but up and left from here.
When I was coming into position I glassed two yotes just hangin out below the bait pile, so I know something is around this morning. On my final ridge I seek up very slowly and take a lil look see. I dont see the two yotes anymore, so I pull off my backpack and sneek up top and use it for a rest and watch for a few minutes. I only have to wait a minute or two and I see 3 yotes on top of the ridge walking towards the bait pile. Now this is where its gets REALLY exciting for me. These 3 yotes I guess from another pack then the first 2 are, and the first 2 are hanging out below the bait pile in some trees. All hell breaks loose with the 2 yotes in the trees as they start barking and freaking out but they stay in their bush, while the 3 yotes on top bark back at them. I cant see the 2 lower ones but 2 of the 3 yotes on top are all hunched over with tails tucked between their legs and the hair on the back of their necks up and out. It was quite a show to sit back and watch this all go down. All this time I can hear another pack of atleast 4 yotes barking over the ridge another 600-700yds away. I talk with my partner later on and he said he watching these 4 in a field and also said he heard 2 more about a km behind us. In total there was 12 dogs around us here. Anyways with the yotes out in front of me I watched them for a minute to see if they were going to fight or not, but it didnt seem like the ones on top wanted to go down the ridge and the lower ones didnt want to go up the ridge. While this was going on I started ranging things to get a idea of what I was shooting. I was thinking of the plan in my head on how I was going to take some of these guys down. My usual plan is to always try for the furthest one on my first shot because thats usually your best shot. So Im lining up on one of the dogs on top of the ridge but with all the excitement I forget about the appro 15 degree incline and plug it really low and get a low gut shot. It jumps and all 3 start running down the top of the ridge the way they came. Never did find that one. Those 3 are gone now so Im waiting for the lower 2 to come out and sure enough they come out right where I thought they would. They get behind a hill then some trees and finally pop out in a good spot. I bark and stop the one and drop him but couldnt get a good shot on the second one, so I let it go because they still didnt know what was going on. Last they knew they were going to get into a fight. heh After the dust settles I see another one coming from the bait pile. I bark it stops looks around confused and falls to the ground. So in total there was 6 dogs right here. Cool beans
Heres my two confirmed
One had mange so Im going to give it to my other hunting partner as he wants to try skinning em.
Wow I think I got carried away alittle on the details here, but I guess I wanted to share my excitement
I think Im going back out again on wednesday or thursday, so as long as I only get 10 timbits I should have some more fur on the ground hehe
cheers
