I just bought a small 1560gn digital scale and tried weighing some .22 ammo to try and see why I was getting flyers. I had read that many competitive shooters do this so for $30CAN I thought, why not? I'm not using match ammo, Federal 714 Champion SV, and have been getting "almost" great results using it in my "target" 10/22. I'm working on the 1/2" Challenge with many "almost" targets with only one or two flyers in the 25rnds. I'm wondering what kind of spread in weight is typical? I just weighed 300rnds and only had a spread of .76gn total. 50.92gn to 51.68gn spread. To anybody who weighs their ammo, Is that normal? Can that little spread cause flyers? I'm going to shoot some tomorrow and will report back on my findings.

You might want to consider getting a rimfire thickness gauge while you are experimenting. From what I have read, this will help you out more in your quest for accuracy.

My results with Federal 714:
Code:
weight count
51.0 11
51.1 69
51.2 718
51.3 569
51.4 511
51.5 317
total 2,195

Although I still "believe" in weight sorting, I don't seem to make time to do it.

g'luck!

Holy crap!!! You weighed a lot. Your figures are so close to mine percentage wise. Did you find it really helped?

I don't shoot it, I just weigh it...

I bought half a case of the Federal 714, did a bit of testing in my CIL 310 and wasn't very impressed. I started weight sorting to see if that would help, but then got distracted with a Sako Finnfire that came with a case of Eley Practice that it likes very much. I just haven't had time/reason to go back to see if weight sorting the 714 is worthwhile.

My 10/22 just loves it, I just can't seem to get it to love it for 25 consecutive rounds, lol. Usually I get 3-4 well under 1/2" groups and then 1 or2 groups with 1 flyer, sometimes as much as an inch. Very frustrating!

I pretty much get the same results with the sk standard plus. Usually 1 maybe 2 flyers in a box of 50. It's highly frustrating. I can't be bothered weighing them.I know Tom e gun is having identical issues as me. I usually just take randomly out of 2-3 boxes of the same lot# thus skewing the percentage of flyers on a 25 shot grouping. Seems to have worked as I've been able to make the challenge twice. If I get a flyer I move on to a new target. I've tried the $20 a box ammo and it still has flyers.

There are factors other than simply the weight of the lead bullet that goes into the overall weight of the .22LR cartridge. As marathonman suggests, get a rimfire rim thickness gauge. Rim thickness matters probably more than overall weight. Better quality and invariably more expensive ammo will have much greater consistency in rim thickness than lesser quality ammo. In the end, getting the best ammo that you can buy will give you better results than weighing rounds and removing those that may be out of the desired range. The following thread on Rimfire Central may be instructive: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=546664

Well the weighing was a waste of time so far. I sorted the ammo in 1/10gn increments with no noticeable improvement in the groups I tried. I still get the occasional flyer and I am sure it isn't me or the gun but what do I know. I might have to break down and get more expensive ammo but it is so infuriating that I can shoot 3 or 4 one hole groups and then have one shot out in left field with the other 4 in one jagged hole. I will look into a rim gauge but maybe I should just bite the bullet, pun intended, and buy some better ammo.
grauhanen, thanks for the link, I will read that as soon as I have some time.
savagecanuck, did you see TEG got a good 1/2" challenge target today? Of course his ammo is worth as much as my whole gun, lol.
