weird k98 rear sight leaf

My friend has a ww2 k98 from his grandfather that is no longer around unfortunately. The sight has a spot weld or bead placed around the 600m increment so the sight can't be dialed in past there. Has anybody ever seen this before? Is it some sort of post ww2 restriction? Just looking for some info about it and the purpose. Does anybody know a good place to get replacement rear sights?

I had a Kar 98AZ like that. In the case of my rifle, I think it was a Post-WW1 requirement under the Versailles Treaty to limit military firearms in Germany.
