Can I use a compact scope made for a handgun or shotgun on an AR? I assume the eye relief would be too long with a handgun scope, but how about a shotgun scope?
I know NOTHING about scopes.
Thanks
Any brand name scope that gives 2.5-4+" of eye relief will work just fine.
Most shotgun scopes tend to have heavy reticals and low magnification power. If this doesn't interfer with the type of shooting you plan to do, then have at it.
I would recommend against it; pistol and shotgun scopes usually have their parallax corrected at 50 yds, which will not be conducive to accuracy at ranges past 100 yds. Some, like the Leupold VX III handgun scopes have it set farther, at 90 yds.
If that's no concern, then fill your boots. But unless you're trying to save some cash by using a scope you have lying around, I'd buy a proper scope for the rifle.

While its true that pistol/shotgun scopes do have shorter parallax settings, I thought that if it was corrected to 50yrds, it was good for 50yrd out to infinite. If it was corrected for 100yrds, it was good to 100yards or longer. The correction might be gross and not fine (like with an AO scope) but effect on accuracy should be minimal. Sort of like shooting for maxium depth of field with a high F-stop lens.
All my scopes are AO, so maybe I've got this wrong.
