Good evening all! I have an old Mauser GEW 98 military conversion that has a weird scope base mount holes pattern, and I was wondering if some one on here could point me in the right direction for some bases?!?!
As you can see the holes are not forward and haft but side to side…
This is a 8mm06 that started it life as a 8x57 it is really accurate and got my spring bear with it open sighted, but wouldn’t mind having the option to mount a scope on it for a back up bison rifle!

I would assume a European mount system of some description. I suppose it is not impossible that replacement bases might be found.
One option would be to find North American bases that could be drilled to match the receiver holes. Or make saddles to fit, and affix bases to them. I'd be tempted to try that first.
A second option would be drill and tap for a quality, available base. This would require at least three new holes if a bridge mount were used.

I would wonder, if those are for a European base - what is the threads in those holes? Standard North American would be 6-48 or some, like some Remington, were done 8-40. But I have seen some rifles done European Metric sizes, or 5-40 or similar. Finding a base will be a challenge - finding correct screws might be even more of a challenge. I would be tempted to just drill and tap three new 6-48 holes and install standard Weaver or Leupold base - then you know what is there.

Step one would be to determine if the screw holes are a metric thread or imperial ... (as Potashminer hinted)
Second step would be to find a competent gunsmith who has found the center line and then drill and tap the holes with your choice of bases, be it a bridge mount (Leupold or the likes) or a set of two piece (Leupold) .
Your choice of rings will then be to decide if low medium or high rings will be needed.
Third step would be to haunt a few local gun shows for guys with a parts bin and search for those treasures.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting.

This is a long shot but I would check the rear base from a winchester 356 or 307 94 angle eject. Looks to be approximately the same spacing

I believe the 2 lateral holes on the rear receiver ring are for the Jaktdiopter m/Hellqvist #1445 rear sight. The front holes are perhaps the same after someone decided they'd rather have the peep sight on the front receiver ring.
I don’t think so, the guy I bought the rifle from showed me a pictures of the mounts, so it was a legit system, from Europe. The problem is I can’t find where/how we contacted each other.

jamesharrison - your post #7 - a good guess - but is "wierdish" - Mauser 98 receiver front ring and rear bridge different diameter, different shapes - but who knows what creativity or lack of thought might have resulted in that?

Damn I wish it was for the those!!
Not specifically the ones in the picture. but rather a source for what you are seeking.
Also there is Optics Planet iirc that may be of some assistance in this quest.
My google foo is poor this morning trying to search something other than firearms related stuff this morning.
Maybe your luck will be better than mine.
