(not the actual gun, just a pic I found)

A 36cal Uberti 1862 Police - 5-1/2" barrel. Used, but just enough to call it used. :D

So, I need powder (FFFg), caps (#10), a capper, powder flask, round balls, and some sort of grease/tallow.
Anything else I should pick up?

There's an extreme pinkie dangle going on due to the small grip, but anything larger would look out of place on such a small frame. It's pretty light too - points pretty good. I feel ashamed saying it, but it's a pretty gun :D

Anybody know of a place that stocks a holster that would fit an 1862?

Ballistol. Lots of it. Don't rely on it for cleaning, but since I switched to it for general purpose lubrication (both internal and external) I've found my cleanup to be mucho easier. A quick wipedown at the range with a rag sprayed with it takes off most of the soot, and it's really handy to spray into the nipples and their recesses. I've also found that the new formula Hoppes BP solvent is great for swabbing out the bore. Armed with these two, my at-home cleaning has been reduced to almost nothing. The last time I cleaned my Navy after a day of shooting the water in the sink looked no dirtier than if I had just washed my hands.

It SHOULD fit a holster for an 1873 SAA, but try it out before you buy.

For grease, you can start by just using crisco. Often that's all I use. It's better if you cut it with (unsalted!) animal tallow (read FAT). Sheep or Deer tallow is best if you can get it.

Capper is optional. MAke sure you bring a dowel to firmly (and safely) seat the caps down hard so they don;t shoot loose.

You might want ot upgrade to Treso brand nipples - they take caps more snugly.

You need a nipple wrench - this is NOT optional!

Also recommend you get some Ballistol and a fine wire mesh strainer to hold the small parts when you wash the disassembled gun in soapy water after shooting it.

Decent Period Holster Eh

As above be sure to get a good quality periiod holster for it. Think Pinkerton Detective or guarding the President when he went to Ford's Theatre. Lincoln's
"bodyguard" went for a drink and Booth changed history. We can only wonder what the Reconstruction of the South "coulda-woulda" been like with President Abraham Lincoln in the White House.
This is a very nice piece and every pocket pistol ever design goes back to its 1862 origins.
Think of a stagecoach ride in picking out a holster.

A SAA holster might be a tiny bit too big for a Pocket Police. If he had the Pietta version he might get by, since it uses the same frame as the Army/Navy models. But the Uberti is the correct-sized (and smaller) frame. I wonder if wet shaping it would work.

All great advice :D

I do have a buscadero rig home (although I don't have a SAA to fill it  - I'll have to fix that) so I can try it for size. But like 1851 Navy said, I think a SAA holster will be too big for this little 5 shot.

I was thinking crossdraw - maybe a slim jim.

Question - fill a universal nipple wrench work? Seems like a stupid question, but sometimes universal isn't universal, if ya catch my drift. :D

I'd say no, since the wrench has to fit into the recesses on the back of the cylinder, which I think is the main reason they don't work. Your best bet is to get one specifically for sixguns.

So If I get a wrench for a cap and ball I should be ok - it'll fit both size 11 and 10 nipples?

Pretty much. Anything like THIS should work just fine. I think all the BP companies have a revolver wrench, and they're pretty much all the same.

Remington used to make a real nice little wrench for the cap and ball revolvers, but I understand they have ceased production just recently. You may still find one in somebodys inventory. If you do - get two! Someone else will see yours and they will just have to have it.
Carry on!
