(i know this has probably been asked before please don't bust my balls)
well i picked up a savage 11 in 308 win today, and i am wondering what people have had good luck with bullet wise. i will be upgrading to a shilen match barrel as soon as funds allow me to.but with the stock barrel what grain bullet seems to do the trick at 400-1400 yards???(i know pushing it with stock barrel) but i got a newly acquired 1400 yards range that is at my disposal and would love to try it out. thank you if you have any prized loads and want to share with me please do.

barnes
hornady
seirra
nosler
speer
lapua etc.

thank you it will be greatly appreciated.

p.s. i am asking so i can order a bunch of different bullets to test this thing out.

Choose a "tolerant" bullet, by which I mean one that has shown to be tolerant of bullet jump and easy to tune. The Sierra 175 Matchking and the Berger 155.5 Fullbore would be the first two bullets I would suggest. Winchester brass is really good; if you want to splurge buy Lapua. For primers use a Fed-210 (match or regular), Winchester Large Rifle, or CCI (match or regular). Use Varget for powder, gather up all the info you can on how much is used, and go from there (work up a load to max, verifying that it is both accurate and also has uniform velocities, ideally a velocity SD under 15fps). Seat your bullet to 2.800" (i.e. plain old magazine length). If you want to fiddle with this parameter to try to improve your accuracy (it might not help; these bullets are *very* forgiving!), tune this parameter last, if at all.

You will definitely have success out to 800 yards. To shoot a .308 at 1000 yards well is very demanding, it can be done but you have to have done a good job on your homework (load development, scope setup etc). To shoot 1000-1400 yards is definitely doable, in the sense that your rifle will go bang and your bullet will land on or near your target - it'll definitely give you satisfying very-long-range plinking, but if you want to get competitive accuracy at those distances from a .308 you will find yourself drawn into becoming an expert reloader and expert shooter...

Enjoy the rifle, have fun with it, and let us know how it works out. Having a place to shoot 1400 yards is just great!

Shooting out to 1200yds in Sask last year one of my 2 guns did not have enough adjustment to reach out there even with a 20moa rail (260 with 140gr VLD's @ 2950fps), make sure your scope has enough elevation left in it to reach that distance or make sure you have a base that will give you the extra you will need.

Most importantly, have fun!!!!!
