So who's getting out this weekend for one last chance at a turkey? I'm taking my 12 year old daughter out tomorrow morning and I don't know who's more excited, her or me! Then I'll be back out Saturday and Sunday morning (unless I get a bird tomorrow that is). Good luck to all those heading out for the final weekend of the season in Ontario.

I'm getting out one last time. Taking a new Canadian/Hunter out as well. He was supposed to come with me last weekend but family obligations got in the way, sure enough I had birds all around and shot a nice jake. Hopefully I can get some birds to come in for him this weekend. He's been through a lot as a new immigrant and just recently got his citizenship, hunting/gun license and drivers license. He loves hunting but only ever did it in the Philippines where it is a pretty dangerous activity. He and his wife work very hard and are extremely proud Canadians now, it's my pleasure to take him hunting/shooting whenever possible.

I will be out every chance I can till it is over .its a long time till next spring ,,lol I love early morning turkey hunting ,,had a great hunt this morning no kill but lots of birds around gobbling up a storm till the farm tractor came out to the field to replant the frozen off corn ,I got one new hunter with a tag burning a hole in his jeans so hopefully I can get him on his first bird ,,thy are still gobbling great here in southern Ontario ,,,Dutch

There were two toms where I can't hunt (without driving anywhere). My neighbor got one. The second one must be too busy with the ladies to come out of the woods. Lol. I was gone for 3 weeks so the chances of getting one this weekend are slim to none.

I have been hunting this week and spent the last three days making the moves on a beauty. 12 inch beard spurs at least an 1 1/2" . How do you know you might ask here is my morning tale.

The last three mornings were spent on a very old and educated tom. Touch a call or if he saw a decoy he moved away. Couple that with him roosting about 200yds onto a neigbouring property where I don't have permission. I noticed he crosses onto my hunting property at the same place in the fence each morning. Checked yesterday and yep there are his tracks from several mornings.

Get in early set up by a big stump with sucker growth the only cover available. Should be a 20 yd gimme' shot. Daylight comes and he is roosted where he always is and the hens fly down and he proceeds out around the corner of the bush on the neighbours. He and two hens spend about 20 mins out in the field and then the hens scatter to go nest. He starts to follow one towards me and she cuts in behind me. OhOh the tom is coming fast but behind me and he is 20 yds out in the neighbours field. The stump I am against is a big one so I sort of roll out to the side to shoot where the hen crossed about 15-yds behind. Not even settled and out he steps at 3 FEET as I am looking over top of the Red Dot as I do to locate the target before I sight and shoot.
He sees a whole lot of something he doesn't like( fat man in a ghillie suit I suspect) Putts and i shoot. Right over top of his head as the Dot was on his eye when dropped the hammer. I know this close with a tight choke, 3.5" shells and a 26" barrel, you have to aim where the feathers meet the neck. Not the first time this has happened LOL.

This is why I love this sport and if you have not missed one you haven't shot at many. Out tomorrow with young lad to a farm I have been saving that had 4 strutters out the last few mornings according to the farmer. Fingers crossed he will have some luck cause i think I put a big dent in my luck this morning. As incentive if the tom I missed survives another year he will be a bruiser and I got one with 1-7/8 " spurs on that farm about 7-8 years ago. He might just break the magical 2" mark next year

Got out with my daughter this morning - no Tom but an adventure nonetheless. Had a coyote come within 18 yds of our blind at about 5:30am....good size, good looking dog, very interested in my decoy. Stopped for a perfect broadside shot and I should have smacked it but didn't...daughter was enjoying the spectacle too much so we watched it approach the decoy, realize it wasn't quite right, run by it before circling and retreat the way he came in. A special hunt for us (2nd time I've had her out) with memories that neither of us will ever forget.

I have always said a "kid will learn more from a day in the bush than a month in school" and times like those make any day worth it. Memories for a lifetime.
