I had to go to a place this afternoon and took my Sako Quad with me (22LR) on the back roads. I ended up shooting three pigeons, two muskrats and a magpie. I like shooting that rifle and it's an excellent truck gun.

Did you eat all of them? Including the Magpie? What did the Magpie taste like? How did you prepare it? Are pigeons actually tasty?
Just curious. I've never eaten either of them.
Eric

All of the animals shot are considered target practice around here as they are vermin.

The thought of eating common pests isn't very appealing to me! Yuck.

whammy I've heard pigeon is pretty tasty, but I would never eat them personally.

Yeah, squab I believe its called. My bud and I used to clear hords of pigeons from a dairy farm he had a deal with. The little buggers would crap on the equipment in the miking shed and make things generaly filthy. We'd go in with our 12ga's with the plugs pulled and hammer them in the yard as they fed on the spilled feed from an overhead conveyer that led to the feed shed. What great fun :D
We'd clean up the yard of carcasses and take them back to town, then he'd give them to an asian owner of a video store who'd make what was left into pigeon pie. (yecch)
My bud always got free videos too for supplying the birds. :D

Some of those pigeons took more than 1 shot too ending up with not very much meat left to eat.

My grandmother told me stories about pigeon pies on the farm when she was growing up. I tried squab at the pink pearl once, and it was pretty ####ing gross. Made me wonder where the bird came from.

Sorry to have stirred the pot up so much. I was really just curious. I've had muskrat before and it was good. I have eaten squirrel before, more of an experiment than anything else, to see if I could eat it and it wasn't that bad either.
What the heck is pigeon pie?
Eric

I've had Squab, not bad. I guess its taste depends on its diet. Had it in a Mexican restaurant down in Texas. But it was after a few margaritas so maybe they do taste like shate...

Im sorry, but this type of thing really gets to me. I am all for hunting, but driving out into the country to kill some animals and let them go to waste is disgraceful. If you have no use for the meat or any other part of it or if these varmints arent causing a problem, then leave the damn things alone. If you need target practice, shoot some groups on paper. Its conduct like this that have the anti hunting bunch saying all us hunters do this and thats what hunting is all about.
Where I live, its a real treat to see a muskrat swimming up a creek and an especially rare sight to see a Magpie, if ever at all. To kill them for no particlar reason is uncalled for.
Same goes for gophers out west. When I hear stories on here of people killing 600 of them in a few days, it really pisses me off. That is not simply taking care of a few problem ones, it is an outright slaughter of them, just for "Target Practice". In a few years from now, these people will be wondering were they all went when they have to resort to paper targets for target shooting.

I know Im going to take flack for my point of view, so go ahead.

The fellow voiced a very valid point. You don't have to blast every single thing you see.

I head down to the valley at night to watch rabbits rustle about on the grass. I certainly never contemplated blasting the poor buggers simply for the heck of it. Even if it were legal.

There aren't enough bullets in Alberta to take care of the magpies and gophers. The more we shoot them the better. Don't cry for them - they're pests.

Thats great, a guy from T.O. & another from North Bay telling a guy from the praries what are & are not pests out West. Gophers, Badgers & Porkies just happen to be a ranchers/farmers worst nightmare when it comes to four legged Walt Disney characters. I'm not saying its bad that its not your cup of tea, but at least take a look at where your coming from before you preach.
I lived out there for ten years & cannot count the number of times I've heard a story of someone taking target practice on 'pests' & guess what no one out there really cares, shooter & non shooter alike. Its friggen farm country & thats what happens...

If you have a lot of crows and magpies in a specific area year 'round, you will have very few songbirds, since the former 2 prey heavily on the eggs and young of the latter. Thinning the predators helps in these cases. I don't think it is a good idea to be too judgemental about the activities of others unless you are neighbors and know that they are destroying something that is neither a pest nor a full-blown nuisance in your area. Concentrations of Magpies, Crows, Muskrats [protected in some areas...trapping only] Pigeons, sparrows, gophers and starlings [plus some other species] vary a lot from one area to the next. You may rarely see them in your locale, whereas another person may be basically overrun by them. I am not in favor of wanton slaughter of any species, but if they are truly a pest, and may be legally shot, I am not against that either. Regards, Eagleye.

You are right, I am not from the Praries and do not know about the numbers of gophers, but I do know that driving down a crountry road and shooting Muskrats and a Magpies is not taking care of any specific varmint problem.Grabbing your gun and heading out into the country to look for some unprotected animals to waste is not what I consider pest control. It seems as though the mere existence of these animals is a problem to some people.

I would suggest that if you don't know what you are talking about that you keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. It makes you look stupid.;)
