A couple buddies and I took a drive out to Hidden Ridge today for a round of sporting clays. This was the first time there and thought it was awesome! Loved terrain and target presentations as well as the super sporting stations he has set up. Hope to get out there at least once more this season. Maybe when its not so friking hot!

The terrain he has there is great for Sporting. I really enjoy shooting there.

I guess I was used to bush terrain with beavers ponds etc in Northern Ontario because I found Hidden Range kind of boring terrain and didn't like that you could see numerous other stations being shot. I also found it to be expensive compared to other ranges I' e shot at? Only been there once and never been back. Maybe he's changed it since I was there in 2015.

Our clubs sporting clays is in an open field and is set up in a big square because of shot fall requirements, any change of scenery is welcome for me, lol! 3 of us went and the owner suggested one of us by a membership and all off us shoot off his card, he didn't care. Membership is $300 per calendar year and come with 500 targets, wind up supper I believe and deals on cart rentals. Works out to $.50 per target as a member and $50 towards the club.

That's not too bad I guess. In comparing though at the Lloydminster Gun Club(Trap & Skeet) $125 will get you a membership and 550 targets($25 membership fee and two prepaid rounds cards of 11 rounds for $50 ea). So for $275 you get your membership and 1225 targets.

Sporting Clay's targets cost more to throw than trap or skeet because there is a bigger investment in machines, land and other equipment. We replaced one of our Pat traps on the trap range a couple of years ago and it cost $14,000. It's pretty easy to have $75,000 to $85,000 invested in 20 machines for a 10 station sporting course.

Comparing pricing between private and public clubs and Sporting and Trap/skeet is complicated as well. As far as Sporting prices, they seem reasonable to me. I have nothing but huge respect for people willing to start up and operate a gun club in this country with their own money and they will get my support whenever possible.

As far as terrain in Sporting. For me, mix of open and bush stations is nice. The rolling hills and coulees that allow targets to be presented below your feet or high above your head present a challenge. The variety of targets they are able to present at Hidden ridge make it a top notch club to me. I wish I was close enough to shoot their regularly.

Myself and another shooter from our club have been making the trip almost weekly, lol! Nice to see different presentations and ideas that we can incorporate into setting our targets at home. Planning on heading out there Friday for a couple hundred targets.
