Last sunday a buddy and I were scouting the hunting grounds on wich we have EXCLUSIVITY. All goes well untille we decide to install a treestand in our usual wood opening besides a carrot field. Once getting within 20m from our usual three we see a block of salt and carrots on the ground...

We decided to do it the classy way. We came back with empty chicken feed bags, put all the carrots in one bag, the block of salt on another. We left them exactly where we found them giving them the opportunity to pick up their stuff. We also left a note in a ziplock bag stating that we had exclusivity on the land and that they were uninvited and NOT welcome. I even wrote down my cell number. Tomorow, I will go back to see if the bags are still there..

Were we too gentle?

Always worth being civil the first contact.

Past that you can escalate reactions accordingly and within reason.

You did the right thing including your cell# as it allows it to quickly and effectively deal with the situation.

For all he knows the area is crown or he thought he had permission, etc. More then one side to every story.

Good response all in all.

Hmm, from Montreal, carrot field... zone 8 south? Not a strip of crown land in the area. Whoever did this must have known they were on private property. Sometimes overly kind land owners just can't say no. Maybe there was a misunderstanding on exclusivity - like bow vs. rifle season. In any case, I'd be checking with the land owner first and get that cleared up, if you haven't already.

Very true. Unfortunately where I live a lot of people post land they don't own or lease and have no right too.

Have seen this several times in my neck of the woods. Local guys trying to keep the weekend hunters away from "their spot". I always carry an up to date property map of the area I hunt.

As for the OP, I usually give guys the benefit of a doubt when dealing with trespassers. Sometimes its a misunderstanding, sometimes they took the wrong trail and weren't where they thought they were...you never know. Being rude just makes you sound like a ####, so I applaud you for being civil and not destroying their property. I would schedule a few extra trips to the property just to make sure that they haven't set up again.

Very classy move on your part unlike some people out there. I have found people on my property and approached them respectfully and got the same respect in return. Being a #### off the start just makes for a bad situation and things can get out of hand very quickly.
