Any one recommend a good smith on the west side of Canada to work on a Savage 24 that’s got Hammer/ firing pin issues. Gun is for my son so want it to work reliably and safely. Thanks

Was the barrel selector on the the side of the receiver or actually on the hammer?
The selector is on the hammer , it’s a 24C the hammer doesn’t go all the way forward and the bottom pin seems to have no spring? I just acquired it and it seems as though it spent its life in the leather Takedown case they came with and the action is full of whatever felt like material is on the inside. It was supposedly unfired and looks like it but unsure. Would like to have the complete action taken apart, cleaned and replaced/ repaired to make it safe and reliable. I honestly don’t have the time or patience so would prefer a professional do it.

The hammer won't go all the way forward unless the trigger is held back - it is a rebounding hammer.

Pull the trigger, and push the hammer forward. See if the firing pin is pushed proud of the breechface. The shotgun pin will protrude farther than the rifle pin.

Yes it does, and yes the shotgun pin protrudes farther( it still seems the spring is missing as it has no tension) thanks for the info, look so like one issue is resolved.

I suggest you go out an shoot a few shells through each of the barrels... that will soon determine if there is anything actually wrong with the firearm.

Planning on it , it’s strange that the bottom pin moves back and forth when you tilt the receiver back and forth. Hopefully get out this weekend to try.
Thanks

Had a quick look at a parts diagram for the 24C. The rimfire firing pin has a retracting spring; the shotgun firing pin does not.

Ok thanks, I would assume all pins need springs though?
Thanks for all the info will test this weekend and update thread!
