Not sure where to post this, but I would like to be able to wear a western style holster for my single actions at the range. Is there a course for these specific holsters?

I see lots of people wearing IPSC or holster for their glocks/1911's but never anything old west style.

What's required? What's the proper course to take?

Same here. A BB course would be good, but the new IPSC rules say no SAO revolvers, so you couldn't use your cowboy gun for it, but any pistol is the same really:

1. Always treat it as if it's loaded.
2. Don't point it at anything you don't want to obliterate.
3. Keep your damn booger picker off the freaking bang switch until you're ready to obliterate ####!

Great info. I will speak with the powers that be at the range and find out what their policy is. Would be great if I could just holster up.

The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) has some good guideline you might want to review- in general our club follows them. By the way, most Ontario clubs have a rule that there is no wearing of sidearms in the club house proper, only on/in the range iteself.

No holstered guns in the clubhouse eh?
Where do you guys put your guns before entering the clubhouse?

I wonder why this rule when it happens that the safest place for a HG is in its holster. Major side benefit of a holstered gun is less gun handling, less gun clearing, and lower odds of an o#### moment.

No holstered guns in the clubhouse eh? I wonder why this rule...

Sidearms in the club house could only lead to tragedy. What if the club executive tried to enforce a no-smoking policy on a member who was already in a state of nicotine withdrawal? What if two members got into a heated argument over which maker did the best leatherwork or whether the Old West was peaceful or wild? What if there was a blackfly flying around inside the club house and an anaphylactic member was carrying a holstered sidearm? Access to holstered sidearms in such a volatile situation could only result in death and murder, and most club houses in Ontario don't tolerate murder.

Duh!

If only I'd known! I always thought it had something to do with some clubhouses allowing alchohol and that guns and booze don't mix.... But your explanation makes SOOOO much more sense!

There is no such thing as a holster course under SASS, they would laugh at the notion. It is strictly a club thing for that requirement. The PPC course or the IDPA NSO course (while both of these are for the discipline, with only minimal parts on the "holster") are generally accepted. The IPSC BB would be overkill.

However..... If you are not practicing for a discipline, like SASS, or the others, why bother with the holster at all. If you are looking to join the ranks of Cowboy Action, then welcome aboard.
