Western Style Revolvers

my buddy wants me to help find him a western style revolover. i haven't really gotten into them too much, so i don't really know what's out there. here are his criteria:

- stainless
- wood grip
- double action
- new, not used
- under $1000 taxes in
- no "dorky, new aged fake looking sights". basically, no plastic sights, fibre optics or anything. standard iron sights only.
- as replica western as possible
- calibre isn't a huge deal, but .357Mag/.38 Special is preferred.

I can't think of any western style revolvers in double action that are available, since single actions were way more popular. If your buddy would settle for a single action, I'd suggest a stainless Ruger Vaquero ($640). It meets all the other criteria including fixed sights, and it comes in many calibres including .357.
 
I am inclined to agree with Amaziah Rimfire (welcome, BTW, A.R.). The Vaquero is a lot of pistol for the money. Two finishes, four calibres (five if one includes interchanging .357 and .38) and three barrel lengths, all for a decently frugal amount of money. Plus they're built like feckin' anvils.

The downside is their single-action status. I'm hoping your friend misspoke. Any double-action western styled handguns I've ever seen are nasty - usually some kinda Belgian knockoffs or potmetal monstrosity from postwar W. Germany.

What they said. The only thing that comes close is a single action copy of a revolver that was double action - the modern Colt Lightning copies. But until somone makes a proper Colt 1877 or S&W New Model 44DA copy, you're pretty much stuck with single action.
 
thanks for the info guys. i think i've got him pretty convinced that single action is the way to go, and he seems to like the Vaquero. but he says he only sees it with the black rubber grips. can he get aftermarket wood grips?
 
You can get aftermarket any kind of grips - wood, bone, stag, etc. Just make sure they're for the proper Vaquero - Ruger changed the frame and grip size in 2005. The current ones are more in scale with the Colt SAA.
