Hi Folks,

I've own a Mosin Nagant that I'm looking for some info on.

It is a 1915 New England Westinghouse, Imperial Russian eagle markings (I assume), also has the SA marking of a Finn Capture. Metal and bore are in great shape (bore is a bit dark, but lots of rifling), wood looks good other than a split behind the heel, the split looks to have been armourer repaired a long time ago.

Serials match, including the bolt, which has been 'force' matched, new serial numbers stamped, old serials stamped out.

No importer marks.

I will get some pics up, but wondering what those of you who know Mosins have to say about such a rifle. Does it's history play well as far as collectability goes or would this be a common find? How are the Westinghouse rifles regarded versus their European manufacture cousins?

Any thoughts most welcome!

Thanks,

DT

i've got the same gun..I think the US mosins were sent over with US troops to russia to fight the commie revolution, and were left behind. Claimed by the russkies and used to fight the finns, then captured and refurbed. Mine has a forced, restamped Tula bolt, and bolt head from yet another mfg. you will likely find pitting on various parts of the gun and bolt from when they were dissasembled and left lying in piles outdoors, sometime between the battle and re-aresenaling... Correct me if im wrong...

I think the westies are fairly common around here, and not worth as much(check out valleyguns.com) but in my opinion one with as much history as that is an absolute treasure! If only these guns could talk

also, check out mosinnagant.net for a wealth of info on Mosins :D

These are some of the most undervalued guns around, good shooters & plenty of history. The us made ones are usualy held to tighter clearances & are not exactly like the euro made guns. Colletable very, valuable not really, not yet anyways. No finn rifle can be conisdered common as there were maybe 1 finn rifle for every 50 russian made. Give it a few years & canadian shooters will wake up to the power of the mosin nagant & pine for the days when you could pick up a finn for $150. Hell if the value of the guns was determined by the size of the nut of the guys who wielded them they could not be bought at any price! :D

As time marches on, the Mosin as a collectible will more and more sort itself out. Hold onto it, you never know. Or even better, get edumacated now so that you can buy all the future collectibles real cheap now.

Remington and Westinghouse made about a million of them on contract for the Russian Imperial Army before the revolution.

I seem to remember seeing a picutre of an ultra-slick walnut-stocked presentation model Remington gave to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.

Keep it but don't look at it or handle it too much because they are known to harbor the germs of a terrible disease that forces you to buy another one, then another one, then another one...
You'll never find peace of mind and your friends will flee you; you'll lose your wife, home and mother-in-law... .
Sell it to us before it is too late!
PP.

My disease started funny enough from talking to PP...so maybe its not the Mosin itself which is the problem......

In addition to my thoughts, I have a Remington among my *ahem* "couple" Mosins (the sickness like I already mentioned I got from Monsieur Pépère) and I quite like it. For me its just the same as my Russian ones, neither better nor worse but carrying the name more people would be familiar of but would have never thought to be found upon the receiver of what is completely a Russian rifle.

I think Westinghouse is much the same, interesting part of the Mosin history and valuable to every person differently.

Thanks for all the comments!

I can't afford another rifle sickness right now :)

I've been debating what to do with it, as I'm shottyless right now and starting to think the ducks here know it and are laughing at me. So it may yet become a trader.

I fear if I get out and shoot it, it'll wind up finding a place with the Enfields and Mausers, and then who knows what will happen.
