What’s a good entry level f-open comp in Alberta for 2019?

I’ve seen some competitions posted in the other part of the forum, but I was wondering where I should start out. I’ve been shooting out at 600 pretty confidently and I think I’m ready for the next step. I have a spot picked out to set some targets up out to 900 and I plan on getting out there this spring.

One other quick question. Is it 22lbs with rifle and bipod? Or does that have to include rear rest?
 
Yes, weight excludes rear bag and rest.

AFRA hosts a couple of new shooter days each year, but they are outside Calgary so its a but of a slog from Fort Mac.

our range up here goes out to 1K
It is not open all the time ( RSO availability ) but the 500 meter range is .

The last time I asked ( I had to look as I never used one to compete) if you are using a bipod attached to your rifle , that is included in the overall weight .
A front detached rest and rear detached bag are not included

I think most are shooting a 6.5 variance ... 6.5-284 , the 6.5 creedmore is this years flavor , some say 7 mm the way to go and ballistics they are correct , but I prefer the 6mm variance myself although I don't shoot competitively in a F open , I do wack alot of gophers in the 800 yrd range , 6 Br or 6 Dasher , 6 BRX etc , highly accurate, good bullet selection, easy to tune, and not range specific , get on a good load and it works

I would drive down to Calgary, or hit up the spra at Nokomis.

Practice is ok, but you’ll learn a tonne shooting with guys who have been there, and done that.

Alberta has a tonne of good f-class shooters. Guys like Brent Webster, Bryan Styzm, Bill Watts, Armin, all extremely good shooters, and I haven’t seen a single person not answer questions for a new shooter as long as that person is polite and attentive.

I know my first match was provincial championships, but I’m a slinger so some question my sanity, and to me it was sink or swim.

Your leather and bondage sanity is only questioned by F-Class shooters on hot days - envied on cold days! Yes - 10kg (22#) for F-Open with all attachments physically attached to the rifle such as bipods, but F-O allows pedestal rests or bipods. 8.25 kg for F-TR including bipod.

F-Class in Alberta is the Homestead range to the west of Calgary and we will host the 10th annual Western Canada F-Class Championship on the July long weekend. There are individuals working to get a range working in the Edmonton north area. Next closest alternative to Calgary is Nokomis in Saskatchewan.
