What’s on my Mosin crown?

I recently picked up this Mosin and during its first cleaning noticed this odd looking corrosion. It’s silvery like the colour of the metal around it. It goes ever so slightly into the rifling. The rest of the rifle is free of this stuff. Any idea what I should do about this? I imagine it will affect accuracy.

Just looks like some pitting that has been cleaned up during refurb.
Considering war-time acceptance standard was something like 30 cm at 100 metres (don't quote me on specific numbers), accuracy probably won't be greatly affected. But then again, my Mosins will outshoot me anyday.

That will affect accuracy to one extent or another, as will any cut, gouge, pucker or pitting on the crown. It can be cleaned up with a 90 deg facing cutter and a 45 deg crowning tool.

I recently did this with a nice Garand barrel with a messed up crown (looked like it was held muzzle down in the crud on a vehicle floor) and it turned out to be a nice shooter.

As already said could be a problem, but shoot it and find out how it shoots then see if it needs to be fixed.

Would be easy to recrown it and clean that away be setting back crown by about 3 mm.

I would leave it. It’s a Mosin Magant, you’re not going to gain anything by spending additional money on it.

I wish I could just leave it but I know how I am and I know it’ll bother me without end until it’s cleaned up.

like others have said - re-crown it and call it a day - enjoy shooting your rifle. Also do not expect 21st century accuracy out of a 19th/20th century firearm. Everything improves over time -

I had over 20 handpicked Mosins and never had one shoot worse than 2" at 100 yards with PRC ball.Most 1.5" several 3/4" at best with irons.

I don’t expect modern laser accuracy. I haven’t shot it yet so I was worried this would make it wildly inaccurate.

I'd shoot the rifle as is to get a read on accuracy and then see what happens with the crown cleaned up. The rifle should produce 3 MOA with decent ammo.

This post cause copious fun that I have been enjoying all day with laughter after I was asked to turn on my phone by pushing the button to see that it would power up. Not only did it power up but I was looking at this very post on gun nuts at the airport before going to security. Someone the zoom feature was enabled causing all kinds of hilarity when the first picture was what opened up on the screen, then I zoomed out.... lol
