What 17 HMR?

I had a 22/45 on order but of course WSS said they had a bunch and had none. So i'm thinking a 17 HMR bolt gun will fit better for me....

I want black stock only, no wood. Probably no stainless since I want to keep it cheap.

Looking for a package if possible up to about 350 or a rifle only up to about 300.

Whats my best option? Seems like there are so many, savage, marlin ect.

What do you have and how do you like it?

Don't think you can beat Savage for the money. Having said that, I just saved-up for, and purchased a CZ 452 Varmint in .17HMR. I've yet to shoot it, but based on what I see so far, it's got the Savage beat in fit and finish...and that's an understatement.
 
I love my Savage GV. I get consistant MOA @ 100yds with the federal v-shock ammo. I don't however have any experience with any other ammo. If you like wood you can pick up this same model for about $300 new. I was very pleasantly surprised with the dark walnut my rifle came with. The accu-trigger is great too as I'm sure many will tell you. If you decide on a savage and are expecting 1" 5-shot groups I highly doubt you'll be dissapointed.
 
I have a marlin 917. Fit and finish are good on the thumbhole stock, not as good on the receiver and bolt. Trigger was heavy, but a bic pen spring changed that. Mags don't seat as well as I'd prefer... but it will shoot 1" groups all day (with someone other than me pulling the trigger)
 
My savage will 93r17 with a barska 6x24x50 will shoot under .5 moa at 100 yards all day with federal ammo, it doesn't like anything but though

My savage .17 is my go to gun for plinking, I've shot crows upwards of 200 yards

Farthest shot on a small bird was 186 yards on a redwing blackbird (yes we had to measure because nobody could believe how far it was)
 
Personally I own a Marlin 917VS. After I bedded the action, free-floated the barrel, and sorted the ammo by weight, I was consistently shooting cloverleafed groups at 75m. I was quite astounded by the repeatable accuracy out of this rimfire rifle. Bought it used too. Oh yeah, the previous user installed an upgraded rifle basix trigger.

For you I would suggest the Marlin 917VR

Done deal 93R17 FV on the way, 6-18x40 Scope and some rings.

Lets see if this one is actually in stock, they "say" they have 47.
 
I have a Savage 93R17 BTVS and I just picked up a CZ 453 Varmint. The CZ is hands down the better gun in every way in my opinion. The fit and finish are first rate and it has the single set trigger which is really nice. Having said that, the Savage is a fine gun too but just not quite in the league of the CZ.
 
jperos, sorry a little off the thread topic here, but do you find the 453 to be worth the extra cost over the 452? I want one of the two in heavy barrel .17 HMR, but I keep bouncing back and forth between which one.

I actually own a 452 as well ( in .22 wmr ) and I love it. The only difference between them is the single set trigger. I personally think it's worth the extra $$ but even without the set trigger it's still a great gun. Can't go wrong with either.

Some of you should go back and read the original post. CZs are fine rifles. So are coopers. And I bet Dave Turnbull could put a .17HMR together that would be awesome!! But for the OPs budget, none of these are relavent.
Ryan500, I too have the Savage 93R17FV, mine with a 4-12 scope that I traded for. I have had people who shoot centerfire positively amazed by the groups it is capable of. I have never shot any Marlins but have talked to others who wouldn't have anything else. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Be sure to chech the EE as there can be wicked deals to be had. Lastly, I myself have NEVER been overly impressed with WS. I will gladly pay a teeny bit more from P&D and know that I'm talking to people with real knowledge of what they speak of.
