Looking to purchase a bolt action .22 but i dont really know what to get.

What names do you recomend? im not looking to spend more than $250 new or used. No single shots just detachable magazine fed.

Thanks in advance for you help.:D

What do you want to do with it?

Optics, open or peeps? Want a target barrel?

I'm partial to the Savage mk2, but there are a LOT of really nice bolt guns out there. You might be able to find a used CIL/Anschutz for that price range too

I'm in the same market, same price range, am currently waiting for someone to get stock of the new Winchester Wildcat, which is a slightly modified and re-branded TOZ-78 (bolt action, 2-stage trigger, iron sights and 4 mags). If I'd had any luck finding an actual TOZ-78, that'd be even better.

http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=525&type_id=100&cat=018C

They're listed in the latest S.I.R. catalog - page 159, $249.99 but they aren't in stock and they have no idea when they'll be getting any (same everywhere I've checked).

If you had more money ($450-$500) then the CZ/BRNO's are reputed to be very good.

Lots of people rave about older Mossbergs, which can be found in decent condition in the price range you're looking at.

I bought a norinco lever action .22 from marstar a couple years back. I know your looking for a bolt but i really recommend the lever. the action is really quick and smooth and you barely have to open and close your hand to reload...it has a tube mag (again i think you want detachable) which holds 15 plus one in the chamber. i think the model number is JW-21 and it runs for $199...$1 short of the free gun case. anyways, i would definantly trust norinco products and you cant beat the marstar gaurantee...i had a "fatal jam" last fall and out of warrenty and they still fixed it for free (minus shipping of course).

other than that the gun is super accurate and i shot 23 rabbits right between the ears last fall before she seized up on me...i definantly recommend it. good luck!!!

Actually, I've had the chance to shoot a fow of the 'rinco .22's, including the mauser KKW trainer clone, and all shot surprisingly well. I'd consider getting their BRNO clone

what do you guys think of a Marlin 925?

I have one. It is well worth the money.

The action took about a brick to break in but now it is as smooth as butter. I can hit a thumbtack consistantly at 25 yards. I don't find the trigger too bad. It's about 4 lbs on the fish scale. The only thing that cheeses me is the 7 shot mags. Buy a 10 round off the hop and use the 7 as a backup.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with the bolt-action Norinco .22 patterned after the BRNO/CZ? (JW 15-A)

Prosper - have you actually shot/held one? (sounds like you may have in your quote above). I have a pretty good idea of what to expect with a Norinco clone (i.e. there's a range from 'horrible' to 'not bad, needs work' and occasionally even 'good'). Aesthetics aside, are these decent shooters?

I've shot a couple of the Norinco .22;s...they all shot well and all shoot extremely straight...again i will recommend the lever action model (jw-21) but i'm usually a big fan of the lever action models anyway. if you want to mount a scope my advice is to NOT buy the lever action...i had one on mine for a short period but took it off because it's pretty hard to get your fingers inbetween it to toggle the safety with the hammer. it does have a safety switch right below the hammer but it's good practice not to rely on those. however if your interested in rabbits, i wouldnt recommend a scope anyways because you lose the .5 second just getting it lined up through the scope...open sites is definantly the way to go if you have a quick shot.

It's a cheap Brno wannabe. I'd rather spend the extra $ and get a real one and then you'll have something good quality, with a good resale value, and a shooter you can be proud of. :)

I had the Norico 22 mag version for a while, inletting was classic Norico a little loose but nothing a quick glass bedding could not fix. I liked it and it shot well, I sort of wish I still have it, but the 917 HMR makes up for it.

But the Savage with the accu-trigger would have my vote if limited to bolt guns.

But the king of plink is the ruger 10/22 :) a semi that can have 25 rounds of plinking goodness :) would fit you budget too.

A Mossberg is a cheap Brno wannabe?

LOL. ;) :)

Oh wait... maybe you had meant something good quality, with a good resale value, and a shooter you can be proud of like a Brno/CZ :)
