I recently started target shooting and and I took my wife along. She like it and wants to go with me more often but She grew up in the mountains of BC so she has handled firearms and wants a 22lr semi with a wood stock she doesn't like the feel of the plastic stocks and wants iron sights as she thinks using optics is cheating.
I aready have a Ruger10/22 carbine with weaver rail and sight, great action but the Ruger factory iron sights leave a lot to be desired. I was thinking of a Baikal TOZ99 the local supplier sold out of them. The Cz512 looks very nice but Pricy and I want one for Christmas and put a decent scope on it. Are there any other brands I might try to steer her towards?

Of course , the first thing to consider is fit - when I got the wife her first 22 we went to the Gun Store and had her "try" a number for fit. She's petite so fit was difficult, ended up with a kid's model.
Personally I would stay away from the TOZ 99 - have one, albeit an older model and find it to be a jammer. Also, spare / repair parts are hard if not impossible to come by. Have the TOZ bolt action and that is a beautiful, accurate rifle.
How about a 10/22 with a wood stock and then switch the stock sights to tech sights, fire sights or something similar?
Remington 597's were available with wood stocks and have decent iron sights.
Just some thoughts fer ya'.

When we bought a 22 for my wife we tried about a half dozen before she selected a wood stocked 10/22. It had the shortest length of pull of the ones she tried. She shot it open sight for a year before she decided to add a scope. No complaints after 4 years.

Marlin 60, 60 sb or 60 ss. They shoot great right out of the box. I did put a spring kit in mine and it made it nicer but it was fine for years before.

You can't decide for her, she has to pick it out herself. You never know what aspect will make it feel right to her (or anyone, for that matter). The thickness of the wrist, the length of pull, where the butt pad fits, how the forearm feels, trigger, colour of wood, the sound the bolt makes when closing, etc.

It'll be a fun day of shopping together!

Why on earth are you asking US! ! ! ! Take her shopping to the local gun stores and let HER pick out something she likes ! ! ! !

I like the way she thinks. There's lots of time to "cheat" with optics later in life when the eyes are starting to go. Hitting the targets well with plain irons or peep sights is FAR more rewarding.

Being such a discriminating sort I'd suggest that the two of you also at least find and let her shoulder a rimfire lever rifle. Many folks really find that levers are just way too much fun.

And if you can find a newer (as in something made no farther back than 1950) pump action that would be another great and fun option. The only reason it needs to be "newer" is so the metal used in it is rated for use with HV ammo that has more of a kick to it. The older actions were often not made from good enough steel alloy to resist deforming from the sharper and stronger impulse of HV ammo.

I took my wife over to the sh!t hole Cabelas & I let her look at all the 22lr on the shelf, told there the positive & negative to each style & model.

Then she handled a few. She decided on a Savage MKII youth in .22lr classic walnut stock with magazine feed. She also wants to do a custom camo job on the stock to make it her own.
she will be using leafs, twigs & flowers with 3 colors of paint to make the rifle her own. She will enjoy the gun more if she has control of what she likes & how it looks. What ever makes her happy in the end.

Have you considered gearing the 10 22 up with peep sights . both skinner and tech sight make peeps that fit . and they are a great improvement over the factory sights . you can also get the fiber optic fire sights from Williams either in the classic style or peep .
