WHAT? 260 Remington for long distance?

I've got a 264 PacNor. It's based on a 264 win, yeah it's belted, and it shoots ok. Was a poor man's build on a Savage 111 with a 31" pacnor med palma barrel, 1-8.5poly rifling and a 20 MOA EGW base topped with a leupold 20X. I've tried 140 SMK & 140 VLD's in it with the VLD's being a bit better. I have 200 Nosler cases that I had to neck turn to get them to chamber because this round is basically a 264 win that is tight necked and has a less than SAAMI throat. LOL, my SMK's have to be seated to a COL of 3.180" to be 0.005" off the lands. The Berger is a little more tapered and can be seated a little farther out. This rifle is shooting .45 edge to edge or 0.2 c-c and that isn't huge accuracy, but the barrel has a round count of about 60, so it still needs some break in.

As always, it depends.

What the 6.5X47L will do flat out, the 260Rem will do at standard pressures.

Raise the 260R to the same pressure levels and it will walk away by 100 to 200fps depending on the bullet weight. The difference gets greater the heavier a bullet you use.

Both can be equally accurate. Lapua brass is nice, expensive and durable. With a bit of prep, Win will do the same thing.

If the plan is to use the 139 to 142gr VLDs, the 260AI, 6.5 Mystic, 6.5-308 improved will walk away for these other two and be superbly accurate.

Like other shooters are finding, this case style is as easy to dial in as the 6BR. Gets you to the speeds these heavies like to fly at with the smallest case capacity. you just need to do a bit of brass prep.

The 6.5 Swede is the same excellent case volume and Lapua brass is readily available if desired. Why it doesn't dominate the LR shooting world is one of shooting's big mystery.

Comparing the 6.5X47L to the 260Rem and improved versions is like comparing the 6BR to the 6XC/6-6.5X47L.

All work great. Decide how heavy a bullet you want to launch and how fast you want to get it going.

There is no replacement for displacement.

6.5X47Lapua or 260 rem, both a winner!

I am doing 2650 with 27"barrel for 260rem with 140Amax and 45grain H4831.
my 25" barrel does the same for the same load...

Thanks guys - For my purposes I will definitely go with the 260 Remington.

BUT

Was just reading a March 2006 Shooting Times Magazine about the 6.5 Remington Magnum. 6.5 bullet in a 350 Mag. case necked down. Velocities exceed the 6.5-284 and its in a short action. MORE RESEARCH........... Accuracy doesn't look to good, but then its out of a 22" barrel.

Any impute on this?

As always, it depends. The 6.5 Rem mag HAS been built into some F class rifles and the accuracy was good - Precision shooter article late 90's.

However, barrel life was not that good and ultimately, the VLD heavies didn't want to go that fast. They pretty much live at 2950 to 3050fps. Slower is fine too but faster...not so much.

The 6.5-284 CAN push to 3100fps so going to a larger case volume does nothing unless you want the speed but need to use a shorter pipe ie hunting rifle.

(In fact, most shooters run their 6.5-284 well below max speed but because of such large capacity need to run faster powders to make up for the lower charge density. One factor in its shorter barrel life.)

At which point, you can choose between the 6.5 RSAUM and WSM variants. Or a 6.5 Gibbs or 6.5-06 or.....

The 260Rem in a 28 to 30" barrel pushing the heavies to 2800fps will be a much better wind bucker then the 6BR. Both can be equally accurate.

If reducing wind drift is important you to, then the 6.5 wins. Just match the case volume to the barrel length to yield the speeds you want with a particular bullet.

They all shoot great.

Xfan, the perfect cartridge at any distance from the F class point of view is the one that gives you the lowest wind drift at a tolerable recoil and hold the X or V ring.

If my shoulder and budget would handle the fun, I would load up a 7 Mystic or 7 RSAUM or 7WSM and push 180gr Bergers as close to 3000fps as possible.

Nothing smaller even comes close.

all I can add is I love the 260 Remington, fantastic cartridge. I have a 8 twist Gaillard on a 700 SA, it shoots great with 140gr Berger, 140 Amax, 142 Sierra HPBT, and 140gr Nosler Custom Comp. 46 grains H4831sc for 2750 fps in a 23" tube. Its not a target rifle (8 lbs scoped with .65" muzzle) but most days it shoots like one. Ive shot it out to 750 yards with the Bergers and Amax, smallest group 4", and that's with a 9x scope! :) I use R-P brass

I use a 260 Ackley Improved for long range. This is the 260 rem with a blown out case and sharper shoulder. I fire form with 45 gr of 4350 and compete with 50gr RL22 or 48 gr 4831SC. Velocity is about 2950 out of 30" barrels.

I use Win 308 brass in one rifle and 260 Rem brass in the other two. Same velocity as my 6.5-284, slightly more accurate and better barrel life.
