What a day, 577/450 disappointment

Well, traveling about today. Got to one of the two gunshops in my area. Found a sweet Martini Henry Mk I!!!!, Good looking, ok, bit of rust, small parts to replace. 1873 receiver 1874 barrel, filthy bore and assembled wrong, etc. Stamps untouched, even the brass block pin and checkered butt plate was there. All original... $500....

So I bought it.......

Well to my disgust, the barrel block under the barrel was broken off. No worries. I can have that replaced... a few minor parts etc.

But the barrel, bent like an bayonet........................ Agh F _ _ K!

Could not see the bend in the shop due to the dirt, etc. Took a few oil soaked patches to get here lookable. Crap, Looks like it was bent along time ago.

Angled to the right approx 1/4" of length from the breech. Looking from the outside, the barrel looks like it was bent down to try and fix it????.....

So I cleaned further.... The rifling was damaged inside on the left hand side, Rifling was deformed .... Crap... this is a wall hanger....

Now I'm a guy that hates guns that don't shoot. 1873 does not bother me, but a deformed barrel. Well.. I've got kids and I do respect others at the range

I am happy to say, they refunded me the money. I hope they weld here shut or part it out. That's all it's worth right now.

What a disappointment

Pete

Hey - you got your money back - that's someone telling you that you're going to need it for a better purchase... and it's probably going to cost more:D

Don't let that get you down.....it is a gun and a caliber that will bring you years of enjoyment, working up loads, trying different sizes and weights of bullets, black powder and maybe even smokeless(did i just say that). You will enjoy this gun long after you would have traded off one of todays' plastic, short mags. Keep looking, don't settle for less, you won't regret it.

It was worth more than $500.00 for parts alone. These bring $2,500.00 on the commercial sites in good condition. Guys can't find parts for them and especially the trigger group parts which were changed on the upgrade to Mk.2 and Mk.3. If the stock was full length it is quite desireable as well. Pblatzz, did it have an uncut stock? When you refer to barrel block under the barrel... what do you mean? Dave
