This has been said many times befor. I'll say it again. I picked up an old and very rusted out barreled reciever for a #4. No rifleing for abour 3" at the muzzel and vey dark bore. It's a Tomato stake but I liked the receiver. I put it together in a sporter stock just to see what the barrel would shoot.
.312 150 g at 100 yards did a surprising 6" group. Not bad for no rifleing. I then shot some cheap factory ammo out of it. Same group but every bullet keyholed and a couple went who knows where. I miced the factory bullets and they were .310. That 2 thou made all the difference.
I am saving the receiver and rebarreling it. The old barrel just aint good enough. But a good lesson.
