I' m looking for a new rifle .. But hesitating on the choice..

I wanna use the complete shooting range that we have in my town 600 yards.. And I know a couple spot were it could be upt to a 1000 yards... So I'm looking for a rifle with a Heavy barrel.. in .308 cal that is really precise.. I've heard from my gunsmith that the CZ 550 laminated Varmint in a real precise shooter..

What you guys think of this rifle .. or should I stick to a Rem 700p or Savage 12 varminter or 10FP

all thanks in advance

I tried that one in a kevlar stock - only to 100 yards though. Yes it was accurate but the action felt terrible - loose and "bindy".

The CZ Varminter is nice. I had the opportunity to shoot a .22-250 and I liked it quite a bit. Made me order a 550 action for a custom .260 build.

All of the CZ-550 actions I've ever handled have been like that, though they do slick up quite a bit after the first 100 rounds or so. Personally I don't mind it, since I know its not as likely to bind up from the odd bit of gunk that might get in there, as opposed to a super-tight, super-slick action.

FWIW the accuracy on most CZ's is awesome - my bone-stock .30-06 shoots 7/8 MOA with a couple different brands of factory ammo.

I've got a couple of CZ550 rifles. Both have heavy barrels and laminated stocks.

They both needed the barrel channels relieved and needed to be glass bedded, before they would shoot consistantly.

One is in 308win and one is in 223rem. The 308 is very accurate, one of those rare rifles that seems to shoot anything put through it well. The only time it deviates from zero, is with weight and velocity differences, but the groups are still tight. As mentioned above, below 7/8 inch.

The 223rem, is another story. It shoots bullets up to and includeing 62grains very well, nothing heavier is consistant. Probably because of the twist rate.

Both rifles were very reasonably priced, considering what you get. They both have set triggers that are crisp and light when set but sticky and creepy otherwise. Hasn't been a problem so far.

Go ahead and get one is my advice. I haven't seen one yet that won't shoot well as long as you do your part.
