What advantages does a 700P .308 have over a SPS .308?

pretty much everything, the main difference being a Heavy Barrel, but that may not be the best if you are wanting to use the rifle for hunting as it does increase its weight substantially.

The stock is way nicer too (costs a lot more on its own than the price you pay with the rifle thats for sure) The HS precision stock is of a better material, tougher, painted a flat black, and has aluminum bedding in it.

Quote from remington on the stock:
Both the standard Model 700P and the Tactical Weapon System feature
composite stocks reinforced with DuPont Kevlar and fiberglass. They'll stay
dimensionally stable in any weather and under the worst tactical situations.
The stock is laid up around an aircraft-grade aluminum bedding block that
runs the full length of the receiver. It has a textured, black,
non-reflective finish and comes with sling swivel studs.

It also has a 12" twist versus the SPS's 10"

The main thing is what you intend to use it for.. if for target the 700p wins, but if you are wanting to carry it around hunting the SPS is not that bad, but precision wise the P takes it no contest.

heavier barrel...unless you're talking about the SPS Varmint...which you didn't specify...

reg. SPS
at what distances and to what extent would a 700P trump a regular SPS ?

You really can't compare an SPS to a PSS. The SPS has a lighter contour barrel and light hunting stock - It is primarily a hunting rifle. The PSS is a hvy barrel tgt grade rifle. The only thing the two have in common is the action. Both can shoot well but their purposes are very different.

Color is a close match :) The p model is heavy, and does require a trip to the gunplumber for fine tuning for long range accurate shooting. The sps is good to go, may be able to get a bit more accuracy from it,by floating/bedding/trigger/ and you could even take it another step and have it all squared up(action), and a target crown cut when the barrel is off. That should make it shoot very well. twist has been covered , so if you like to shoot 150/165 gr bullets the p model is a winner.

My SPS has a bead blasted and blued finish, it looks like.

My wife's M700Police has a parkerized and dull finish. Looks like it's been bead blasted AND parkerized. I like the rough (like 400 grit) finish on the barrel.

My wife is just happy that her rifle is black like my M700 VSF. LOL

Cheers,
Barney
